The relative location of the town of Sykesville is situated 21 miles Northwest of Baltimore, 24 miles East from Fredrick, and 53 miles North of Washington D.C. Distance Decay is important when defining an area or a region and the actual definition of Distance Decay is “the tapering off of a process, pattern, or event over a distance” (textbook). In terms of Space-Time Compression, Sykesville is 14 miles away from Ellicott City, 74 miles away from Harrisburg, and 503 miles from Knoxville. More specifically, Route 32 connects Sykesville to all the major towns within Carroll County and Route 70 connects Sykesville to other parts of Maryland. An example of this would be the innovation of the B & O Railroad station in Main Street Sykesville in to a restaurant in 1997. The purpose of the restaurant was to bring back income to the town after the devastating natural disasters that had occurred years before and devastated the town.
