Vitalizing the Town of Wingate Wingate is a small railroad town in North Carolina with a population of around 4,000 people. The people here are held together mainly by the social fabric of Wingate’s University, a college lodged directly in the town’s center. Instead of having a lively downtown area for the college’s students to roam and hang out, there is an only a large highway, highway 74, that runs right through the middle of campus. Bringing in commuters from small towns along the highway to the large city of Charlotte for work and attraction, this road is an artery that moves people through the heart of Wingate to keep the town and University alive. Wingate is a town that has the potential for growth and economic development; however needs an appropriate plan and management to do so.

Many options have also been explored, not only for population growth but also for economic expansion and reconstruction of the town. To rebuild and expand, the current Town Manager, Mr. Patrick Niland, has approved a bypass road of highway 74. Completion of this road would mean more traffic moving adjacent to the football field of Wingate University, and hopefully exposing the quaint town and University to a new pool of people. As I walked up the whitely painted wooden steps of the white, Victorian-themed house, which was the Town Hall of Wingate, I was reminded of my childhood.
