Figure 1 shows the basic attendance and membership breakdown for the various weekly attendee groupings in WPA. The graph shows the weekly attendance sizes centered around 5,000 attendees per weekly attendance category. Furthermore, the red bar plus the blue bar represent the total membership per size category.
The largest section of membership is captured in churches between 34-149 weekly attendees with 56% of the conferences total membership. Additionally, WPA churches below 34 weekly attendees make up 15% of total conference membership. Furthermore, as the church’s weekly attendance their member to attendee ratio increases. Figure 2 – Number of Churches per Category Figure 2 showcases the total number of churches per weekly attendee category. A large majority, 84%, of all conference churches are comprised of fewer than 100 weekly attendees. In fact, 61% of all conference churches contain fewer than 50 weekly attendees. Furthermore, 16 churches in the conference are larger than 300 plus weekly attendance, while 2 churches are larger than 1000 plus weekly attendance.

The average church is small in the Western Pennsylvania Annual Conference. 84% of all WPA churches have less than 100 weekly attendees. The conference is ranked 50th in average attendance with 24 fewer weekly attendees, but has a relatively large number of members. The average membership to attendee ratio is roughly 3:1.
Small churches are normal for Western Pennsylvania. Like most small churches, WPA churches spend less money and incur less debt. However, they are also one of the lowest performers in outreach ministries with a rank of 54 and an average of 325 people served in the community.
