Peet's Weaknesses

The weaknesses of Peet’s revolve around a few notable aspects, the first of which is its menu variety. Although it does offer different products, these food and drink options have little variation within them. Also, compared to some of its competitors, Peet’s is not as active with advertising and promotions, both in store and online, which deducts from Peet’s potential customer base. Additionally, locally Peet’s has an issue with service at their on-campus locations, as a large amount of UC Davis students frequent the locations during peak hours, making the service slow and unreliable. The opportunities for Peet’s are important for its success in the long run. Peet’s has the opportunity to open more locations in order to effectively compete with Starbucks, who has a large lead in the race for number of stores in the United States. Also, expanding its menu is an option which could help Peet’s increase its market share and compete with other coffee shops. Furthermore, their rewards program is largely unexplored, making it possible to expand in that realm as well. They also have the opportunity to advertise promotions to a wider audience. Product-wise, their sales concentrate on a wide line – from coffee, teas, and pastries, to high quality coffee-wear and equipment – all to support Peet’s well-known brand and image. However based on customer input depicted in Section 6 of the Appendix, over a third of the customers believe that Peet’s menu does not offer a wide enough variety of products, particularly for the drinks menu. This leaves vast room for improvement for Peet’s to expand their menu and market the newest additions to their high-quality product line.
