To follow its motto of “Building Towards Success” the Home Depot needed to set out for itself a very clear mission, “To provide the highest level of service, the broadest selection of products and the most competitive prices. We are a values-driven company and our eight core values include the following: Excellent customer service, Taking care of our people, Giving back, Doing the ‘right’ thing, Creating shareholder value, Respect for all people, Entrepreneurial spirit, and Building strong relationships(Home Improvement and Hardware Store Mission Statements).” There is a lot to live up to in there and upon careful review I believe that at least in most of the goals they are succeeding. The Home Depot’s efforts to provide the best in customer service is evident not simply on their website but in their stores. Talking with their staff makes it evident that they know what they are talking about and they are always happy to help even if it requires stopping what they were doing to provide a demonstration, that is assuming of course you didn’t already see it done at one of their many workshops they offer for free to the public almost every weekend. Then there are their prices which are consistently held low thanks to the competition between The Home Depot and its rival Lowe’s. While Lee Wallender shows in his article “Lowe’s vs Home Depot: Which is Better” that neither of them can claim to the cheapest in the market, as the only time the comparative prices of one significantly drop below the other is during a sale, The Home Depot definitely lives up to its promise of competitive …show more content…
To provide excellent customer service they hired knowledgeable people and supported them with over 7 million hours of training every year. They take care of their people through the Homer fund, which is a non-profit charity to assist their associates in times of need. Then there’s the Home Depot Foundation and Team Depot where the company can be seen giving back and doing the right thing for the communities that have supported them by being there to provide disaster relief through volunteer work. Their respect for all people can be seen in the testimonials given by several employees seen throughout their website, and their willingness as a company to allow those employees to try new things and adapt to unexpected scenarios shows their commitment to the entrepreneurial spirit. Finally, the adherence to these values has proven successful for the company resulting in growth year after year living up to their promise to create shareholder value. (Community)

All in all The Home Depot does a marvelous job of living up to its mission statement, and only fails where there is a clear conflict. But in all other respects their website does clearly shows their dedication to their customers, employees, shareholders, and the communities around

Five Forces Analysis Internal Rivalry Internal rivalry within the outdoor recreation retail industry is moderate to high. The industry consists of many sellers resulting in high competition. However, majority of the market share is owned by large companies such as Cabela’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Big Five Sporting Goods, and Hibbit’s.1 Smaller companies reside within the industry too but they have trouble competing with larger company’s prices. The larger companies have lower profit margins but sell substantially more products so they can take part in price competition and still be profitable. I did notice that the Lowe’s website allows customers to provide ratings and reviews, whereas Big Lots did not. Also Lowe’s posts on its Facebook page pictures of their products and a lot of mini short videos of people working on home improvement. I think it’s pretty effective. I watched a couple of those videos myself and seeing regular people working on making their houses look more beautiful, made me feel like those were simple things that even I could do on my own. Those pictures and videos had thousands of “Views” and feedback, way more than those content shared in the Big Lots Facebook…
