I recently read that Congress is adding a new national holiday and were looking for citizen input. Billie Joe Armstrong should have his own holiday, named Green Day, for having his band be very influential, helped renew interest in punk rock in the U.S., and has sung a variety of different music types that appealed to a large audience. Billie Joe Armstrong’s band was very influential to the music industry. A Times UK article states about the American band, “their influence has been all over British carts” and that bands from Sum 41 and Blink 182 had been weaned on Green Day and Billie Joe Armstrong. In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue looking for new land to settle upon. He stumbled upon the North Americas which was then and still is the most influential discovery of all time. His finding has led to life as we know it today. Even though Columbus was the hero who discovered the new world he is also deemed as a sinister immoral figure that brought plague to North America, and also launched the later global practice of slavery. I believe that Christopher Columbus is deserving of his Holiday because without his actions even though sometimes harsh we wouldn’t have this great Nation.…

In school, children are taught about the great adventurer Christopher Columbus and how he discovered the New World. People learned to lionize him as the hero who discovered the country of America, but what’s never mentioned is that Christopher Columbus is not what Americans are lead to believe. The facts that are missing from history books is that he was a slave owner, a murderer, cruel, and greedy. If he possessed all of these terrible traits, then why is there a day dedicated to him? James Joyce said "Christopher Columbus, as everyone knows, is honoured by posterity because he was the last to discover America." This quote is one hundred percent true because Christopher Columbus did not discover America, he merely expanded the idea of it. Columbus actually never set foot in America, and Vikings had already settled in the eleventh century. These are only two of the reasons Columbus day is an embarrassment to this country. So we need to take down Columbus’s name and rename this holiday after something more fitting, like “Recognition Day”.…
