Through the many years of my swimming career, the sport has transformed me into the adult I am today. For the past twelve years, I have called the Woonsocket YMCA pool my home. I learned how to swim there at five years old, joined the swim team at seven, and finished off my high school swimming career at the age of seventeen. Over the years, I have made lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and achieved goals set for myself and the team. My swimming career has been primarily known for the leadership I have brought as a captain, the sportsmanship I displayed during meets, and the dedication I have put forth every practice enabling me be the best swimmer I could possibly be. Being captain of a varsity sport was a major responsibility I did not take lightly. Knowing that my teammates were dependent on me, I became more open minded …show more content…
Particularly in swimming, sportsmanship is shown through various actions such as cheering on the opposite team, wishing your opponent good luck prior to the race, and congratulating them after the race. One moment I learned from was during the 200 Free Relay. My relay and the opposing teams relay were the only one’s swimming. I was anchoring the relay and the opposing team kept up with us the entire time. As I dove in, I was neck and neck with the other swimmer. As I pushed off the wall, I gained yardage but at the last second, he touched the wall before I could. My first reaction was I wish I could’ve done better and I initially forgot to congratulate him. I got out of the pool, went to the other side where the team was to look for the relay, and I congratulated all four members of the relay on their race. After I returned to my team’s side of the pool, my coach approached me and told me I had broken a personal record. Not only did my competition motivate me to become faster, I learned a valuable lesson that will last in my

It came as a shock to me, new coaches and many new girls on the team and they chose me to be the captain. This past school year I was given the honor of being the JV Tennis captain, it came as a huge surprise to me, seeing as it was new coaches who had only met me a month before naming me, captain. This was my second year of being on the team and I was one of three seniors on JV, many of the other girls were freshmen and sophomores. My coaches presented me with the idea of being captain by giving me the following three reasons: I always give 120% at practice, I am always the first one to volunteer when they are looking for someone to help one of the new girls and, they saw potential in me and saw that I always had a positive attitude.…

Everyone in at some point in their life will experience an event that will change their life forever; ranging from either a physical or mental change, to one that challenges someone’s beliefs and viewpoints on the world. For me, I experienced all three of these changes during my time on the First Flight High School Swim Team. By being a part of the team, I was able to break away from a former negative aspect on life and realize the potential and knowledge one can gather from those around them. In order to discuss the changes I experienced with the team, we must first break down how and where it all began. After moving around for the majority of the early years of my life, my family would settle down in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina shortly after my father’s retirement from the U.S Coast Guard.…

In this essay, I will discuss the carving of swimming reindeer one of the ice ages most beautiful pieces of art discovered in Montastruc, central France, from 13,000 years ago. I will begin to explain the significance of their design and use to our understanding of human development. The figure illustrates two reindeer that appear to be swimming and was found in Montastruc in central-southern France. When it was initially exhibited in Paris in 1867, the elaborate carving demonstrated that humans subsisted in conjunction with Ice Age animals and had inventive minds, the same as present humans (The British Museum, http://www.britishmuseum.org/whats_on/all_current_exhibitions/swimming_reindeer.aspx)…

Competitive swimming has been a large part of my life for the past twelve years. Now that my time as a young swimmer is coming to a close, I realize the impact my coaches have had on my development as both a swimmer and a person. One coach in particular, Tracy Merke, has influenced my outlook and attitude towards both swimming and life in general. When I joined the YMCA team, I did not know anybody. While my teammates were inclusive, Tracy was extremely kind to me, going out of her way to introduce me to swimmers my age, and making sure I felt comfortable.…

The meet would take place at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer, Wisconsin; lasting a full four days, starting on Thursday and ending on Sunday. On Thursday I would swim one event, Friday one more, and on Saturday and Sunday I would have two each.…

I have really enjoyed working with the Special Olympic athletes on Thursday nights this semester. Week after week, I am so humbled to be able to spend time with these students, as they always remind me to appreciate and celebrate the little things in life. Along with that, it has been so fun to develop relationships with these individuals. I love listening to them tell stories about what has been happening in their lives throughout the past week. In addition, one of my favorite parts of each week is seeing the athletes make improvements in their chosen sport.…

In one of the most notorious boxing moments in history, Mike Tyson took a chunk out of his opponent's right ear. Tyson was docked points yet came out in the next round and bit Holyfield's other ear causing him to be disqualified. Sportsmanship is about having respect for opponents, officials, teammates, coaches, and the game itself. Tyson did not show respect for his opponent, coaches, and the game match itself. Coaches are responsible for the actions and character development of their team.…

It may be hard to achieve these goals at first, but I learned to always stay determined and that hard work will always pay off with success. I’ve also learned to maintain a more positive attitude on life, and focus on what is going right instead of what’s going wrong. Competing in swim meets against other schools, has coached me to acknowledge failure and losses with dignity and respect. All teams lose but instead of getting discouraged, I take those losses to reflect on my strengths and weaknesses so that I may improve for the next meet. Swimming is a team effort and has taught me the importance of working with others and encouraging others to do their best.…

I sat down by myself and reflected. After tens of thousands of hours of devotion, swimming has become a huge part of who I am, and will no doubt shape the person I will come to be. One of the earliest lessons swimming taught me was to never give up. When I was 9, swimming taught me to fight the fatigue during lap two of a race. When I was twelve, swimming taught me to attack race two with everything I had, even if race one hadn't gone my way.…

“Victory is remembered for at most two decades: an act of good sportsmanship is remembered for a lifetime.” Simon Nguyen. By definition sportsmanship is defined as: fair play, respect for opponents, and polite behavior by someone who is competing in a sport or other competition (Merriam-Webster 2015). Though it isn’t a hard word to define, I like better the definition from Kidshealth.org, Sportsmanship is a style and an attitude, and it can have a positive influence on everyone around you (Downshen 2014). I recently went to an elementary football game of my cousins.…
