“ Gracie, what happened your timing is off, your strokes don’t look right, and you are getting too close to the wall. What happened? You need to be better ,” my coach said to me with disappointment. I had no idea what he meant when he said “I need to get better,”. When my coach told me about my problem made me think way more about my strokes. I have been swimming for most of my life even if it wasn’t competitive and I had never really focused on my strokes. I already knew that I am supposed to drink water even when I’m swimming, and that I need to stretch before and after I get into the pool to avoid getting hurt. I also already knew that I needed to warm up and cool down before I started swimming hard. My coach always

Through my research I found stretches for before and after swimming, what gear you should/need have, how to do backstroke better, how to do butterfly better, and just some good breathing

There are a lot of reasons why the new swimsuit, the LZR Racer, can affect the forces working on a swimmer during a competition. Some think it is a good reason, such as Mark Schubert, the United States swimming head coach. Others think the swimsuit is a bad idea, like Italy's head coach, Alberto Castagnetti. I believe that the LZR Racer is a bad idea because it would be unfair for racers in other countries. Here are some reasons why.…

Each one of them had a common view of swimming which was it not being a highly recognized or hard working sport. I was having a discussion with my brother Johnny, on a humid day in our backyard; we had a long hard fought argument that we still presently bump heads about. From the words of my brother, he stated “swimming is not constant played sport, therefore you do not put as much effort into it as you would in football.” His reason did not shift my opinion, due to the fact that swimming uses the same amount of physical energy to practice and be prepared for a meet, as any other sport. It is not as simple as swimming laps back and forth, the sport includes, technique work, dry land (working out) and a healthy…

“Put some meaning into your words,” said my chorus teacher as apathetic faces and idle mouths stare back at him“ A folk song of this magnitude should not be sung with such a light heart”. My ears tune into the dissonant voices surrounding me slowing interpreting the lack of passion already evident to my teacher. Subconsciously, my eyes and head slowly move downwards trying to shield themselves from the wave of indifference flooding my class. As I open my eyes, I am met with the gaze of the words boldly printed on my sheet of music - Wade in the Water. My thoughts are delayed as the urgent words capture my attention only to be interrupted by a piece of my reality.…

When I was a child my uncle was a second father to me. I used to be on a year round swim team and although he lived in the bay area he would be at almost every meet. He would also introduce me to new sports and activities which I could never forget. As I turned eleven years old he completely disappeared from my life for what seemed like no reason. A year later my parents began receiving letters from him explaining how much he hated them and how he wished the worst for me and my sisters.…

Medical conditions that made up 27% of the drowning deaths in Australia in the 2013/14 period consisted of cardiac conditions, including ischaemic heart disease and coronary artery disease, epilepsy, and dementia. It is common to see that with these people they drown not from their medical condition, but from taking medications for their conditions. Some of these medications may increase the risk of drowning as they may make people unsteady on their feet or slow their reaction times. Swimming safety and education programs should also include information on the risks of certain medical conditions and using medications to fix the problems whilst doing aquatic…
