The day of the swim meet was finally here, it was 8:30 in the morning on a Sunday and we just finished warmups and singing our school cheer. As I line up in lane four with the rest of my teammates, I can feel the butterflies fluttering around in my stomach. On the starter’s command, my friend slides into the water and gets into position to start the first leg of the 200 medley relay. Everyone in the stands falls silent as the referee shouts “Take your mark!”, then the sound of the starting beep goes off and the swimmers push off into the water. As my friend begins to finish her first lap, I step onto the block and get into position. The shouts and cheers from parents and swimmers are blocked out, as I focus all my attention on the water. Once my teammate touches the wall, I jump off the block and the nerves that I felt before, goes away as my body pierces through the ice cold water of the St. Francis College swimming pool. Finishing my two laps and being able to out touch my opponent brought me a rush of excitement and pride. In that moment, I felt relaxed and relieved because I …show more content…

Walking on the pool deck my freshman year I was nervous yet excited. I questioned what I was doing as I had never played water polo, but I decided to give it a try. I thought, ‘how hard could it be.’ My first practice proved it was truly brutal. I was out of shape, did not perform the drills correctly, and I could barely swim with the ball.…

The smell of chlorine on my skin is a scent I don't even realize any more. I let out a deep yawn as I slowly tie up my hair into my specific bun. I then in a one fluid motion I latch my cap on my bun and pull it over my head. The next step is my goggles, I place them on my eyes and let the tint change my surroundings. I jump into the cool, but some how thick water of the YWCA’s pool.…

Everyone in at some point in their life will experience an event that will change their life forever; ranging from either a physical or mental change, to one that challenges someone’s beliefs and viewpoints on the world. For me, I experienced all three of these changes during my time on the First Flight High School Swim Team. By being a part of the team, I was able to break away from a former negative aspect on life and realize the potential and knowledge one can gather from those around them. In order to discuss the changes I experienced with the team, we must first break down how and where it all began. After moving around for the majority of the early years of my life, my family would settle down in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina shortly after my father’s retirement from the U.S Coast Guard.…

I began to spend more time worrying about my performance than actually trying to improve it. Before I knew it, I had slipped into a hole of swim season depression. I counted the days until it was over. Despite my best efforts to avoid the butterfly stroke, my coach really seemed to think I had a natural talent for it. Naturally, the team’s butterflyer quit and I was chosen to replace her in the one hundred yard butterfly: arguably one of the most hated races in the swim world.…
