In A Modest Proposal, the narrator of the essay is Jonathan Swift, Swift speaks in first person point of view. In Angela’s Ashes, the narrator of the autobiography is Frank McCourt, McCourt speaks in first person point of view also. Swift talks about Ireland’s internal problems in a political perspective, while McCourt talks about Limerick, Ireland, in a young, naive boy’s perspective. In contrast, the two different narrators comprehend certain situations differently from one another because of their divergent viewpoint of Ireland. “However, I know not how, whether from the affectation of singularity, or the perverseness of human nature, but so it unhappily falls out, that I cannot be entirely of this opinion [that we ought to abolish Christianity].”

McCourt uses a tone that is very humorous, hopeful, and childlike. Therefore, Swift uses a tone that is humorous, and ironic but yet cynical. “Well nursed, is, at a year old, a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food” (Swift). This quote supports Swift’s humorous tone because he suggests that the people of Ireland should eat their young to get rid of hunger in Ireland. The idea that one year-old babies are “delicious” whether they are “stewed, roasted, baked or boiled” is so intense it demonstrates the overall irony of the piece. “All right. Tell the priest if you like but the Angel on the Seventh Step said that only because you didn’t tell me first. Isn’t it better to be able to tell your father your troubles rather than an angel who is a light and a voice in your head?” (McCourt 125). This quote supports McCourt’s childlike tone because McCourt has been troubled over the word “piss” and the story of Emer, he is worried that he is in a deep state of sin, he comes to conclusion to tell his father and his father responds to him talking about the angel on the seventh step and McCourt still believes in the angel, revealing that he is still in a childlike state of mind.
