Kehlani Parrish’s new album, SweetSexySavage, is her way of telling the story of her past while staying true to who she is today. Kehlani has a lot to tell her listeners on this album, and she does so in a blunt, fearless, and lighthearted way. By no means did Kehlani just walk into stardom. She had to overcome depression, homelessness, and many other challenges along the way. But who she is now is a beautiful, strong women with a breathtakingly honest album. One of the most defining moments in Kehlani’s life, that got her to where she is today, was her childhood. Kehlani had a disorderly upbringing. They didn't win, but in that moment Kehlani discovered her potential. The group went on tour shortly after, but Kehlani stayed back and began writing songs of her own. During the summer of 2013, she released Antisummerlove, a song that caught the attention of P-Lo, Iamsu, and Sage the Gemini. After the release, Kehlani began working closely with P-Lo’s rap group, HBK Gang. "There was no question. They needed something that was bigger than Bay music, and I needed Bay music” (www.thefader.com). Kehlani found that she clicked perfectly with the group, they gave her what she needed and she gave them what they were looking for. Since then, Kehlani has focused on making music that empowers women and minorities. One of her most famous songs being,“ Tell Your Mama”, a heartfelt song dedicated to reminding people about the importance of their loved ones. Kehlani uses her album to tell her fans about her broken past. Kehlani is seriously wounded, and she has no shame in telling her audience that. Her album features a song called “In My Feelings,” in this song she brings forth her broken self, asking someone from her past, “Why you be doing me scandalous? You just assume that I’m strong and can handle it. Why do you make me feel like I am less than my worth?” Another single on the album,“Keep On,” she points out her own flaws and mistakes from her past: “You can tell the world that I’m a narcissist. I would think they’d listen to you. Cause I ain’t been the best that I coulda been.” The fact that Kehlani is so honest and straightforward about what she's been through sets her apart from all of the other R&B singers who just use R&B music as away of

I highly enjoyed Kyra Selman cabaret show at Rockwell. She did an amazing job telling a story in a musical genre. Songs that really stood out are I am what I am, Drunken Love, and Black Girl Medley. The reason those songs stood out because most likely they are songs I have heard already, while majority of the other songs in Kyra cabaret I did not recognize and can not give a name. I enjoyed the whole show but the areas where I know the songs help me remember the story.…

The social and political system in the United States of America unquestionably revolves around white supremacy and misogyny. Many pop culture icons have attempted to make a change, but none have seemed to have done it quite like Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. The pop icon released her album, Lemonade, in April of 2016, which lyrically and visually shows themes of different social issues such as racism and the treatment of women. Beyoncé combines the two together and explicitly discusses the injustices faced among African-American women, which can be heard and seen in the visuals during songs like “Don’t Hurt Yourself” and “Freedom”. Beyoncé takes her personal life, expands it, and leads it into the illustration of the struggle black women face across the United States.…

With the rise of the feminist movement during the early 1970’s, we saw not just an increase in the number of women participating in pop music but also a change in how they participated. Carole King entered the music scene as a singer-songwriter, penning lyrics that were more personal and introspective than previous music had been. For example , Carole Kings it;s too late,” from her 1971 Tapestry album, boasted confessional lyrics that exemplified the genre: “There’ll be good times agin for me and you,. But we just can’t stay together.…

In this irritably captivating, yet profound, song entitled “Look What You Made Me Do” (L.W.Y.M.M.D.) Taylor Swift, the artist, presents us with her inner self-awareness conveyed through her lyrics recalling of the media attention towards herself in the past. The specific moments can be classified together and labeled as when controversy arose surrounding her name. Swift is bringing back all the reasons in which have sculpted her being into what, and where, it is today to in a sense, exhibit her past as a timeline in the form of a song. She showcases her self-awareness of the person she is and her evolution throughout her career. In this, she mocks herself in a way that the general media does in a way that presents itself as light, but when delving into it further proves meaningful.…

Lady Gaga sings about loving yourself regardless of your differences of sex, race, or gender. Although I do not particularly like the song melody, the lyrics hold true importance and should be understood by everyone everywhere. Ignorance is still greatly prevalent in the world and may never even be stopped. However, through outlets of music and respected artists such as Lady Gaga, we may achieve world harmony one day if the message is spread. She also encourages her audience to look past their disabilities and be brave during hardships of bullying or teasing.…

My love for K-Pop began years before Psy ever erupted onto the American pop music scene with his ever so popular song “Gangnam Style”. To be exact, I have been a long time fan of the genre for roughly seven years now and am still to this very day an avid listener and fan of K-Pop. As a young fourteen-year-old at the time, I remember wanting to search for new music to listen to and had discovered K-Pop music videos largely by accident by simply clicking on recommended videos on YouTube. One of the many recommended videos was the bubbly, cutesy, and colorful song “Gee” released in 2009 by the popular girl group, Girls’ Generation. “Gee” is about young girls who first experience falling in love and how their hearts flutter; the word ‘gee’ in the…
