Sonsyrea Tate once said, “You can leave home all you want, but home will never leave you.” This statement gives light to a higher meaning of the word “home” than merely a place to live. Many people look at home as a place or a dwelling, but not many people see home as a state of mind; however, home is a state of mind. The Architizer defines home as a complex, interpretational, and unique way of organizing and understanding the space within ourselves and the way the world around us is constructed (Linda Bennett, "Architizer"). With this definition, one can assume that “home” includes heavy influences on feelings, thought, and actions. Home is an underlying theme in the movie Sweet Home Alabama. This movie is an example of literary fiction- while …show more content…
She had a wild past with many encounters with the local sheriff, and she was well known as “Felony Melanie.” She did not grow up in a very wealthy family, nor did she have a big house. She married her childhood sweetheart Jake Perry, but this relationship quickly became volatile. She moved to New York City, desperate to get out of town and start her own clothing line. Melanie changed her last name, being ashamed of her redneck roots. But all of her lies all begin to fall apart when she is to be married to the Mayor’s son, and she finds out that her presumed ex-husband is actually still her husband. Melanie must return home to resolve this issue, without disclosing information about her home that she is very ashamed of to her fiancée. When she arrives to Alabama, Melanie faces many things about her past that she had walked away from (Moritz, "Sweet home Alabama"). The meaning of “home” has a considerable influence on Melanie, and this meaning helps advance the work as a …show more content…
As she is the main character, the audience follows her throughout the movie. This provokes the audience to feel the same ways that she does. The audience is also able to relate her experiences with experiences of their own. An audience member will find that, although they might be very different from Melanie, their view of “home” could have several parallels with hers. Each person has things in their past that they are ashamed of, and this movie helps people to accept those things and be proud of their past. As the viewer watches Melanie’s view of “home” change, as on outsider, they can see how it could better themselves to do the same. The writers of this script have done a very nice job with entertaining and providing understanding- the two elements of literary fiction (Johnson, Arp, AP edition Perrine's sound and sense: an introduction to poetry, p. 57). Melanie’s meaning of “home”-while changing- helps advance a higher meaning of the work as a

Home is a strange word because it can contain so many meanings. It can mean things such as habitat for living things, or it could mean a place where you feel as if nothing could hurt the people in it. You feel happiest when found at home, and it feels like a sort of heaven. The idea of a home relates to this text because Long had to leave his in order to be safe. He had to enter a new home, where he felt like a stranger.…

That wasn’t the only argument I found to be very convincing. As stated in the essay, “Maybe the house I lived in with my parents will never be home again” (Allison, 2009, p. 27). This one really opened my eyes, more so than this first example. At first I didn’t think this statement was true. To me home would always be home.…

“Home is where the heart is” is the old famous quote that many people have said. But in some cases this is farthest from the truth. Tate’s statement suggests that “home” is a place, or even a state of mind. In the novel Wise Blood, the character Hazel Motes is far from home. A returning war veteran, Motes comes home to find his house in Tennessee abandoned and his family gone.…

We can turn anything, anywhere into a “home”. Four walls do not define home, home is rather defined by the state of mind the person is in when referring to “home”. Home to me is the house that I grew up in, the river that I spent many summers getting burnt to a crisp tubing down, the smell of my childhood bedroom when I walk into it for the first time in a while. Home is the bumpy dirt road that my truck barrels down in the back woods that I grew up in. Home is my daughter’s toys thrown all over the house, and the love that I feel when I come home after a long day at work.…

I decided to watch and analyze the movie Sweet Home Alabama. The movie is focused on the life of one particular character, Melanie Carmichael (actually Melanie Smooter). Melanie grew up in a small town in Alabama; her family was like many of the other families there: country and part of the working, middle to lower class. She married a man when she was younger, but after they split, she moved to New York where she made a new life for herself and met her now fiancé, Andrew. The major conflict in the plot is that Jake, Melanie’s ex, never signed their divorce papers, making them still married.…

When the word “home” is defined in a dictionary you are given definitions like “the place in which one’s domestic affections are centered” or “any place of residence or refuge” but to me home means so much more. To me, home is theatre. Those who know me well will attest that the change in me throughout this experience is drastic. Theatre transports me to places I couldn’t dream of otherwise and two years ago, I was taken to a place that would change my life forever and theatre transformed to the place I call home. Thoughts and ideas flooded my mind as I stepped into the off-green colored cafeteria.…

He failed in that experience and came back to California. This is what Melanie’s childhood and teenage years looked like up until she got pregnant out of wedlock, married, and then lost the baby. After the loss of their baby, Melanie felt that the only way she would ever “become anybody” would be to leave Greenville and move to New York City, and this is where the self-disclosure and intimate relationship she had with her family came to an end. There was no longer any cohesion in their relationship. This went on for seven years until Melanie’s engagement when she is forced to go back to Greenville and confront her parents and husband. When Melanie arrives back in Alabama, she has to adapt back into the family lifestyle that she once had.…

The first underlying theme is perseverance. Forrest Gump goes through many trials in his life and no matter how hard it got, he continued to persist. He had this trait ever since the beginning of the movie. When he was a child, he always found a way to continue and bear with his issues.
