Complexity and contrast strike the audience hard when making comparisons between the two musicals Buffy: Once More with Feeling(Joss Whedon) and Tim Burton’s adaptation of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street(Stephen Sondheim). Buffy: Once More with Feeling is a TV episode in which the people of Sunnydale start singing due to a mysterious force and Buffy’s sister Dawn is kidnapped. Buffy and her friends go out to find her sister and the mysterious Sweet, who is a demon with capabilities of making his victims start to sing and reveal their darkest secrets, while making some of the victims explode. Buffy sets out to destroy the evil forces in a determined fashion when she and her friends passionately sing “We’ll see it through it’s what we’re always here to so we will walk through the fire”. In Sweeney Todd, it is also an essential theme as his wife is “…his reason and his life”. Both the musicals have a protagonist who had a close family member of theirs taken from them by the unfavourable antagonist. The lead characters of both stories seek vengeance from the enemy. Romance is also evident as the characters have romantic bonds with their partners, for example, in the climax of Buffy, Spike says “I died so many years ago but you can make me feel….”, and they go in for a passionate kiss. In Sweeney Todd, Sweeney was happily married to Lucy Barker, who he had a daughter with. Upon his return, the mysterious and gaunt Mrs. Lovett confesses her love for him “Yes, I lied 'cause I love you!
