According to an impact study conducted by Leonardo Becchetti, a professor at the University of Rome, “the rise of child labour [is] one of the most politically sensitive issues in our globalised society”. In his report, Child labour and consumer responsibility, Becchetti acknowledges that many scholars consider the sweatshop owners as the biggest cause of sweatshop child labor. This is because they are the people directly exploiting, manipulating and abusing innocent and poor children into manufacturing cheap products to be sold for their own profit. On the other hand, Becchetti himself believes that the primary cause of sweatshop child labor is the consumer.
