Background: Ms. Benalcazar contacted the Lawrence Public School District Early Childhood Division with a referral concerning her twin sons (Asher and Benjamin); although she was concerned about both boys, her main concern centered on Benjamin. Ms. Benalcazar was concerned about both Asher and Benjamin Benalcazar-Gioroux performance at preschool.

Both boys have attended Hilltop Preschool on the University of Kansas campus on a daily basis. According to the mother, last year, Hilltop made a recommendation that the boys be retained because of academic, behavior and social concerns. Because of their late summer birthday (8/9/2011), the Hilltop personnel felt that an additional year of preschool would provide support that the boys needed

Staff reported that often the boys play with each other on the playground, and that Asher is the more dominant of the two. On the day of the visit, Asher and Benji did not interact much with each other. Asher sat alone and played with sticks on the sidewalk by the building. Several times other students approached him to play, and he would play with them with the dirt and sticks or he would ignore them. He was observant of changes in the class, in that he turned and watched two students who came into the class and did their morning routine. He preferred watching them to participating in a class activity of practicing a song for graduation. He did replicate some of the hand movements, but he refused to sing. Para asked him to sing, but Asher ignored her request. When the Para and a peer tried to put their hands on his shoulder (part of the song routine), Asher refused and pulled away from them. On their second song, Asher refused to sing or do the hand movements.

The class then broke into Center time. Asher joined a group of boys playing with the flexible Lego’s. After playing with them for minutes he pulled away from the group and preferred to play by himself with the Legos. Several times, each of the boys tried to include Asher in their play, but each time he pulled away. After several moves away from the boys after they approached him, Asher began playing with the wooden block. He would stop playing with the wooden blocks and would watch the boys with the Lego’s but he did not join them. The Para went over to have him make the choice of the blocks. When Asher did not comply by making the request, the Para placed the “ticket”

Childhood is a multifaceted process in which many changes occur. To fully understand the changes throughout childhood, one interview and observation was conducted to a toddler perspective, and a second interview and observation was implemented on a school-age child. Vast changes arise from infancy and toddlerhood, jumping to later childhood, and that was deceptive when comparing the outcomes from the two observations. Alex, who is eight years old, was the topic of the school-age child interview and observation.…

The article I have chosen to read was Disappearing Act by Michael Gurian. This article specifically focused on how the male attendance at universities and higher learning institutions has changed dramatically over the years. For example, up until the late 1800’s women were not able to further their education. Perhaps the author wrote this article because he wanted to bring it to the audience’s attention about how the drop in male attendance has been increasing over the past couple years. But in order to get a better understanding we will first discuss issues that can be seen from the early school years, then we will look at what the universities and institutes were like then and finally, we will see what the universities and institutes look…

So, these first years are the foundation that frames children’s growth, development and learning. All children have the right to an education and to an environment in which they are able to reach their full potential in life. Children at the age of five or six attend kindergarten, the first class that starts off the educational path in life.…

Two ways in which prejudice can be reduced are Equal status contact and the pursuit of common goals. Deutsch and Collins (1951) carried out an early study of equal status contact. They compared two kinds of housing projects, one of which was thoroughly integrated with blacks and whites who were assigned houses regardless of their race, and the other was segregated. The residents of both housing projects were intensively interviewed and it was found that both casual and neighbourly contact were greater in the integrated housing with less prejudice among whites towards blacks. It appeared to be environmental support, which was sustaining prejudice in the segregated housing.…
