Rose only wants a family to feel safe with someone, “I took all my feelings, my wants, and needs, my dreams…and I buried them inside you. I planted a seed and waited and prayed over it” (Act II Scene I 18690 Rose). While Deli wanted to be respected for making the money and working rigidly: “Mah tub of suds is filled yo’ bely with vittles more times than yo’ hands is filled it” (565). Yet, in both stories they get cheated on and the men are unaware that the women are in fact strong; until the end. Rose had her realization when Troy brought home baby Raynell, “This child got a mother. But you a womanless mas” (Act II Scene III 1873 Rose). While for Delia it was over all the abuse and reticule, “She lay awake…Drowned in the salty stream that had been pressed from her heart” (565). In the drama Fences it was Rose who grew a backbone and stood up for herself, due to her feeling betrayed and hurt. Whereas for Delia it was after all the abuse and hurt she felt, although it was her hope and strength that never wavered that helped her to her realization. Finally the women come to terms with their choice to be without their men. For Delia it was after fifteen years, “fifteen years of misery and suppression had brought Delia to the place where she would hope anything that looked towards a way over or through her wall of inhibitions” (569). For the story “Sweat” it was due to her husband not being faithful, as well as not respecting Delia. While, for Rose in “Fences” it was due to Troy not feeling much like a man. Both marital relationships have a common denominator, which is a cheating husband who needs a confidence boost. While for the women may be doing what they can for the family, but maybe not for the husband. Which in turn is what causes the husbands to cheat in the first place. The point of the fence is to keep the family together, when it’s finally finished the family is torn apart. Delia stood up to Sykes pushing him to drastic measures and leaving her in the end not feeling guilty, but hope. Finally, in the end of both “Fences” and “Sweat” but women do not regret their decisions with their husbands, but they stand by them. After all, “A strong woman will automatically stop trying if she feels unwanted. She won’t fix it or beg, she’ll just walk away.”
