Swearing Field Report

On a typical Wednesday night in Bloomington, a couple of my old friends from high school, Kasandra Rieckers, Brycelyn Ruddick, and Kourtney Branaman, and I went to the IU volleyball game against Purdue. After the game, we went back to Kasandra and Brycelyn’s dorm room to talk about our Halloween costumes. The conversations of people that have known each other for a long time and see each other often will vary a lot from the conversations of people that do not see each other as often. These field notes will highlight the particular tendencies and patterns in conversation that are typical between my friends, from high school that came to IU, and I. In the first part of the transcription, 17:02-17:50, we see how girls often ask each other for …show more content…
Swearing can be a way to emphasize what you are saying. Thomas Murray shows how curse words can express many different emotions and feelings. When Kourtney says that we could “get fucked up,” she is putting an emphasis on the idea of getting drunk and having fun with our friends. When I said we could “rent a fucking cabin,” I was showing that I was excited about the idea of renting a cabin with all of our friends. We talked about how when the cops showed up to a party that Brycelyn and I were attending and my mother came to pick me up, she used swearing because of how angry she was. Now, we think it’s humorous the way she called me names when she arrived and when the police approached her but at the time I could tell how angry she …show more content…
These are conversational signals that can indicate several things. When people raise their voice they can “show a relationship between ideas…or express emotions” (Tannen 160). Brycelyn says “YOU BROKE IT ALREADY” loudly to show that she is upset and angry towards Kasandra for breaking the straw. She again uses loudness when she says “DID YOU SAY CHRIST-MAS OR NAH” to emphasize a popular phrase. Brycelyn uses loudness a third time when she says “THIS IS IT RIGHT HERE” to show how excited she is about the possible spring break trip. Talking louder than before can show the importance of the information that you are saying. Often times, the other people will show interest in what you are telling them if they believe that it is

Rhetorical Analysis: Inappropriate rhetoric demonstrated During the three video presentations the appeals such as pathos, ethos and logos were present to demonstrate, suggest and emphasize persuasion in what they were trying to illustrate. To better understand, Pathos is the way we express emotion while speaking, writing or while we present our selves. (Video: Introduction to Pathos) Ethos is the author's credibility about the topic spoke, written or experienced shared, for example if I would talk about how to cure a disease and I'm not a doctor my words wouldn't be as credible as if a doctor was speaking.…

Thumb’s Down Strong offensive language is widely used by everyone whether it’s when texting, or speaking to someone and it conveys a strong and emotional message. In addition, there has been a small number of authors who have used it in a story such as Cristina Henriquez when she wrote “Micho Alvarez”. In her short story Cristina used profanity to channel her emotions towards the mistreatment of Mexicans and what they go through.…

In his book, Blue Chicago, David Grazian defines roles based on interactions that people have in Chicago's Blues clubs. Roles such as these can be assigned to people in any social situation. This principle can be extrapolated to other social contexts such as the expression of gratitude between Oberlin College students and the staff at Stevenson Dining Hall. This is demonstrated through the observation of interactions between students and staff members in three different scenarios: swiping in at the door, dropping off dirty dishes, and getting food from the servers. In each of these scenarios, there are those who express gratitude by saying "thank you" and those who don't.…

In the short story, Jock Culture , Robert Lipsyte discusses his interview with the Columbia University crew coach, Bill Stowe and the difference of what he called “jokes” and pukes”. He describes the jokes as “brave, manly, ambitious, focused, patriotic, and goal-driven” people and the “pukes” as “wolly, distractible, girlish, and handicapped” (Lipsyte, 305). I would call myself a jock just because I was a 3-season athlete throughout high school. I was captain of my high school volleyball team and my senior year year was named “League All-Star”, along with multiple other awards. Along with playing volleyball all year around, I also played basketball and golf.…

Being a dramaturgical theorist studying gym behavior would give one many interesting subjects and possible things to study. By simply looking at the stereotypes associated with gym culture, you could see them as one huge performance. The best, and most widely known example of this “performance” would be the men from the show Jersey Shore. Ever since Jersey Shore had been popularized I personally, have seen a rise in “gym going.” Going to the gym to these men gives them a sense of prestige and dignity, otherwise known as Face.…

There has been a request from several people to remove books from the curriculum such as Huckleberry Finn and Catcher in the Rye due to some inappropriate language. Although I am aware that foul language is not acceptable inside the walls of high schools, I cannot assist with that decision. Many people out in the real world use that language on TV shows and movies, social media, with friends and family, and definitely in numerous books! A couple of books with a few choice words should not harm anyone. Most likely, the high school students will already recognize all of them.…

Profanity roams the world at different degrees in different places and situations. Putting Girls in Boxes Both Jamaica Kincaid and Charlotte Perkins Gilman wrote with the purpose of informing others of the difficulties faced by women. Kincaid’s short story “Girl” expresses the way a mother places her daughter in a box and expects her daughter to remain there. Similarly in Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper”, the narrator’s husband John diagnoses the narrator with a mental illness and expects her to remain within her room resting and not doing anything. Through the development of the characters, point of view, and conflict, both of these stories portray women who are affected by the boxes they are placed in.…

For the first major assignment for Professor Julia Green’s Communication 211 for Spring 2016, I partnered with classmates Lori Rainey and Sarah Beattie to “analyze how the different forms of communication yield different results when it comes to communicating” (Green, Week 4 - Major Assignment 1: Blog). By going through the exercises, I have reconfirmed that the form of online communication best suited to me is email versus social media such as Facebook, or texting. Unlike some people, I find texts are more difficult to respond to for many reasons, including the limitation of the touch-screen keypads, as well as the synchronicity of the communication, depending on the user’s attention to their phone. As an example, I routinely forget my cell…

    Analysis Of Like A Girl

Whether intentionally or not, especially as a male, we all have used the term “like a girl” without a shadow of concern about the ramifications of such words. Our obnoxious preface that girls may be inferior, as evident by the phrase, has sadly been apparent since youth and changes the schema in which both genders view the world at hand. The people over at Always have created a campaign centered on the rhetoric of counter-thinking societal clichéd views. Growing up as male within a predominately female family (both immediate and extended) allowed me to see the fault in this line of thinking. Seeing athletic, intellectual or artistic abilities being dependent on the person rather than their gender for which my family proves time after time.…

I tend to talk a lot and will even talk over people if I come up with a thought or idea and I do it without realizing it. So what I personally need to do is to self-monitor my interactions with people and when talking about issues and to listen more and to wait to speak to voice my opinions. Another way to communicate more effectively is when we get mad, to wait first before we talk about the problem. We need to calm down so that we do not say things that we do not mean. This will also give us time to think about what we want to say to one another and how we want to say it.…
