“I know. I’ll get an F. I’ll lose the scholarship” (427). In the book Swagger by Carl Deuker, Jonas, a kid from California, is put in many situations that he was not expecting. After moving to Seattle, and meeting his friend Levi. Jonas meets Coach Hartwell, who was his his dream coach. Until Jonas learned Levi was being abused by Hartwell, and that is where most of his troubles start. Jonas can not focus, Levi can not play basketball, and Jonas will lose his scholarship. Although friendship can mean more to somebody that anything else in the world, people should always follow their instinct. Jonas is struck with something he has to do, he has to talk to his coach, Coach Hartwell. Hartwell has put Jonas in a terrible place, he lost his best friend, and he is the one who has to make it right. “I’m warning you-don’t play the hero. All you’ll do is blow up your future” (419). Coach Hartwell does not want Jonas to snitch on him. Hartwell says it would end up being worse for Jonas because Levi is not alive to support. Jonas can not live with himself knowing that he could have helped Levi live. He knows that he has to do right by him, by telling people the truth about Hartwell. In Swagger by Carl Deuker, Jonas’ live revolves around basketball, Levi, school, and Coach Hartwell. Jonas has to make many difficult decisions throughout the story. For Jonas, friendship and basketball means more to him than anything. In the story Jonas conveys the theme of friendship multiple times. “I guess. But do you really think Levi got lost that night? Or that he was drunk or on drugs? Because I don't” (444). Jonas knows his friend very well and knows he wasn't doing anything bad.
