S’niya, a fourth-grade student at Miramar Elementary School, was given four assessments from a Scholastic resource packet that helps to determine what level of reading a student is currently achieving. The Scholastic resource assessments allow a teacher to establish an idea of the student’s reading proficiency and also helps to conclude what sort of instructional plan would best suit the needs of each individual student. With the Clinical Educator’s discretion, S’niya was assigned to complete a third-grade phonics and vocabulary assessment, and a fourth-grade phonics and vocabulary assessment. In Peg Tyre’s article, The Writing Revolution, Tyre analyzes the quality of education in a New York high school and discovers the problem with education in today’s society. New Dorp High School on Staten Island was known for their reputation for poor education, low graduation rate, and high drop out rate. In spring of 2007 four of every ten students starting as a freshmen dropped out from New Dorp (Tyre, 1; 2012). After discussion between the principal and the faculty the staff concluded that the reason for the crisis was that the students were simply bad writers. The reason I chose to weigh Seraphina’s Promise, chapter quiz 25/25 is because this assignment is based on the student’s ability to listen, comprehend, and answer questions pertaining to the text through a paper test. The senior grade at Tupelo Christian Preparatory School had managed to split up into two sections. The 4.0 National Honor society students travelled the high road and took a collegiate level English composition course, however, the athletes and educationally challenged were thrown into the melting pot of English 4. Writing has proven to be a very serious struggle in my academic journey as a whole. I struggle with naturally choosing to write how I speak, and in an academic setting this proves to be very harmful to my grade. This un-academic style of writing cause me to make a 2 on the AP English exam when, if I would have simply taken my time and chosen to write more scholarly, I could have scored a far better grade on the exam and certainly would have been able to exempt English 1101. Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. Chickering 's Theory first developed in the 1950’s and 1960’s focusing on student development.
