Suzanne Collins made a few connections to the present time in the world, like coal mining, and modern weapons. For example, on page 146, it states, “Hovercraft bombed the rebel outposts into ashes”. This shows cutting-edge technology, and in this case, bombs.

The author is an expert of this time because she was alive during most of the Cold War and most likely knows about weapons that were present in that time. This is why she is an specialist of this time and subject.

Suzanne Collins was inspired to write The Hunger Games Trilogy when she was watching coverage of the civil war currently happening in Iraq. She was also heavily inspired to write the books because of Greek Mythology. She also wrote it to bring to light the atrocious things

“We're so self-important. So arrogant. Everybody's going to save something now. Save the trees, save the bees, save the whales, save the snails. And the supreme arrogance? Save the planet! Are these people kidding? Save the planet? We don't even know how to take care of ourselves; we haven't learned how to care for one another.” George Carlin. This is the brutal truth of the world we live in today; hardly anyone seems to value or respect each other. Yet not many of us choose to notice this let alone try to raise others attention to our behaviors. However, bestselling author Suzanne Collins, does just that. Author Suzanne Collins uses her talent of writing (novels) to open the reader’s (otherwise oblivious) mind to the tragic ways our own…

Before English 1157, I wanted to cry at the thought of writing an essay. I had always considered myself to be a horrible writer and I just had to accept the fact that I would never be good at it. Instead of being taught how I could improve my essays in high school, the teachers were only worried about the 5-paragraph essay format. With that being said, Dr. Rutledge mentioned how he hated that format and would give us an F if we used it. Terrified, I thought to myself “All I have ever learned was this format, how am I going to pass this class?”.…

During an interview she was asked “What was the hardest part of writing The Hunger Games?” (Margolis) She replied, “When you are going to write a story like The Hunger Games, you have to accept from the beginning that you are going to kill characters. It is a horrible thing to write, particularly when you have to take out a character that is vulnerable or young or someone you have grown to love when you are writing them.” (Margolis). This could be why Collins incorporates so many characters into The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games has now spent six straight years on the New York Times bestseller list, this could influence Collins to want to write more books because she knows she has the fanbase that she needs. A theme in the novel The Hunger Games is pain because throughout Katniss’ entire life, she has seen her loved ones die or get hurt. For example, in the book Katniss said, “‘At eleven years old, with Prim just seven, I took over as head of the family’” (Collins, 26). She had to grow up so fast, and with no mother or father figure, she experienced major character development in order to take care of her family. She had almost no one but her sister who loved her, along with the fact that she had no one to guide her through her life. In addition to Katniss having to take care of her family from such a young age, she also lost Rue in the games, “Slowly, one stem at a time, I decorate her body in the flowers. The inspiration for Suzanne Collin’s novel, The Hunger Games, came from channel surfing between reality shows where young kids were competing against each other to young kids fighting each other in a real war. Katniss is a sixteen-year-old girl living in district 12, a coal-mining district, who winds up fighting in the Hunger Games after volunteering to take her twelve year old sister’s place. The novel takes place in a futuristic world after an apocalypse has flooded most of the landmass leaving behind a newly reshaped American continent now named Panem.
