"Shitty First Drafts," by Anne Lamott dismisses the myth of the “perfect first draft” by explaining how horrible first drafts really are. It seems that she is writing to a young, student-based audience. Lamott mixes in a lot of humor which makes it fun and interesting to read and since she writes in a very informal tone it helps her connect to the reader more than if she wrote more professionally. Along with this Lamott seems to be trying to see through the audience’s eyes by telling her personal story about writing restaurant reviews for magazines.…

Since the beginning of my first year at school I have been learning to read and write. Throughout these years I have had a lot of experiences with reading and writing. All through high school we would write responses and essays over books we read. Once I entered college everything changed; I began to learn about writers and people who were known because of their great works of literature. In college, you are held to a higher standard and responsibility than you are in high school; this challenge has encouraged me to work hard and because of this I have become better at writing.…

I went and saw the author Charles Baxter at the Reedley College the other day, it was the first time I had ever attended anything like that before, like sat in while an author read a few paragraphs from his book. It was very interesting being able to hear pieces of a book knowing we could ask question to the man who wrote the book himself. The room was filled with people, so many people that they had to bring in chairs, people were even sitting on the stairs, and in the front on the floor. The room was pretty warm for it being cold outside and raining but that’s understandable since there was a lot of people in one place. It was pretty cool to hear what others wanted to ask the author and his responses to the questions he was asked.…

Here I sit, staring at the beaming light of my family's computer writing an essay at the nineteenth hour of the day. I’m not complaining after all It’s quite relaxing, with a bit of music as well as pure silence amidst the remainder of my parent’s residency. The one thing I hate more than people rating/reviewing books before they have read them, is when people hate on authors for writing in the same universe. Ever since it was announce that Cassandra Clare would be writing more series in the shadowhunter universe (The Dark Artifices and The Last Hours) people have gone mental. I have seen so hate towards her on goodreads and such, that she should not be writing more books in this world – that she is only doing it for the money. As a writer and reader this makes my blood boil.…

Whether we know it or not in this modern society we are writers everyday of our lives. These interactions shape not only how we communicate but how we write as well. Personally, I have been shaped by the influence of both other writers I have known and those I have only read the creations of. Those same influences contributed to both my writing style in the classroom and to my identity as a writer. I spent a lot of my childhood with my nose deep in fiction novels at near by libraries.…
