Ever since man was created, there has always been a need to survive no matter the cost. We all have that survival instinct within us. In our lives we hope never to get entwined into a life and death situation, but if the time does come we have to do whatever we can in order to survive. Many stories have been passed down from generation to generation about the need to survive and the lengths it took in order to succeed in it, some of which, I have read and found quite interesting. One story that comes to my mind, and to other people, is the story of Suzanne Braun. Suzanne is a Jewish survivor of the Holocaust. She defied death at the bloodiest and horrific concentration camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau. Suzanne was just a little girl when the German forces raided her town, and took all the Jews to the Auschwitz concentration camp. The first time was when she was sent to a gas chamber. Another example is the experience of a hiker exploring the Blue John Canyon. Many people know of this experience, due to the movie made to teach other hikers about safety- 127 hours. It starts off with Aron Ralston, and avid climber and outdoorsman. He decided to go hike in Blue John Canyon, and his excitement led to him not telling anyone of his hike. When he was hiking he slipped on a canyon slit and an 800lb. boulder left his right- arm pinned. He was left only to survive on his only water bottle for 5 days. Once the bottle was fully empty, he was left helpless. It was here that Ralston made a daring risk. He got his multi-use knife and carefully, began amputating his pinned arm. He had to do this quick, careful, and painless. Once he fully amputated his arm, he was able to make it out of the canyon and signaled some hikers exploring the area. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital and to this day he remains alive and grateful for being able to
