Sutpen Character Analysis

Rosa is the first narrator to tell the story of Thomas Sutpen, a mysterious stranger who arrives in Jefferson, Mississippi, one day and forever changes the lives of many of its residents. Rosa is the oldest of the narrators and was living at the time the events took place. Over forty years have elapsed, however, and her longstanding hatred for Sutpen is a major influence in how she remembers the events. She recalls simpler, happier days in her family and believes that its downfall began when Sutpen married Rosa's older sister, Ellen. Rosa tells the story in a bitter and accusatory tone that places all blame for her family's demise on Sutpen, whom she describes as a demon, an ogre, a djinn (similar to a genie), and a fiend. As a rule, what surrounds a character in a book, either a different culture, or geography, tends to change their moral principles. Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, is a perfect example of how even though someone has everything they need, they can end up doing insane things. Mccandless, the main character, is affected by extreme environmental surroundings, because his thinking shifts from being brave to feeling morally guilty . Cristopher, used to have all he wished, but because of his solipsistic personality, this wasn't enough.…

Speak is a coming-of-age novel about 14-year-old Melinda Sordino as she struggles with the weight of her pain as a victim of rape. Melinda is a fictional character; yet, for thousands of other girls in the world, her experiences are a vivid reality. Although I have not shared her experience, as long as there is someone that is able to relate to Melinda, I believe that Speak is a realistic representation of adolescent experience. Rape crimes are far more common than people believe it to be. According to the survey done by the National Institute of Justice, one in six American women have been the victim of an attempted or completed rape .…

“To live in bitterness is to be chained to the person who abused you, your emotions and actions arising not independently, but in reaction to your abuser. Louie became so obsessed with vengeance that his life was consumed by the quest for it. In bitterness, he was as much a captive as he’d been when barbed wire surrounded him” said Laura Hillenbrand, the author of Unbroken, in regards to the main character Louie Zamperini. In the novel, after Louie was released from the POW Camp Naoetsu, he tries to return back to normal life in Torrance by meeting and marrying a girl named Cynthia and also by returning to the track to run.…

Courage is seen a lot through Anh’s family and they were always using every opportunity they had to better themselves. Despite being different and having experienced what people would definitely would not want to. Determination was seen clearly in every character and they would never give up until they had complete what they set out to do. Determination and courage are two of the many qualities they all show in the book and is what drove them to be successful and without these qualities they would never have been as successful as they are now.…

To Live follows the sorrowful life of Xu Fugui in a time of great change in Chinese society (the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution). I think Forman did a pretty good job compared to some other authors who have tried similar things in different books that I have read. I do think she could have made Adam's personality stand out a bit more, but she did make it pretty convincing that it was Adam telling the story by the way she wrote and the words she used. It was clear that it was a completely different style than when Mia had been the narrator. When I had first started reading it I was a little shocked that she had switched narrators just because I had thought she would want to explain more of how the situation had affected Mia.…

The previous quotations reveal how little Miss Rosa knows about Thomas Sutpen. They actually summarize Miss Rosa’s story which she is trying to understand by telling it. This is also an epistemological fact. She is trying to make sense of a man who comes to Jefferson, Yoknapatawpha, on “Sunday morning in June in 1833 when he first rode into town out of no discernible past and acquired his land no one knew how and built his house” (Faulkner, Absalom, Absalom!, 7).…

Another situation where Katniss changed, was the belief she had that the twelfth district, along with her, were the victims who suffered the most. As shown in the book, Panem is governed by a controller, dominant, oppressive and tyrannical dictatorship that is the Capitol. One of the reasons why people in her district could be punished was for possessing weapons because the Capitol could not risk having another rebellion. She was aware of that, and although her father was very good at making weapons, he could not sell them; “My father could have made good money selling them, but if the officials found out he would have been publicly executed for inciting a rebellion” (5). It can clearly be seen that despite the young age of Katniss when her…

It would be difficult to find a cuter, more adorable little girl than Anise~! At least, that's what somebody would assume from Anise's introduction. Even her weapon is a stuffed animal, that she's able to control so that she can ride it around during battle.…
