The Kingdom Police Force took over thirty thousand statements, interviewed Sutcliffe nine different times, and missed several different things that would have helped solve the case (Jessop). One of those things was an anonymous letter written to the police force from one of Peter Sutcliffe’s friends, Trevor Birdsall. A different thing the police missed was a brand new five-pound note that was left on one of Sutcliffe’s victims. It was traceable to a local bank and the company Sutcliffe worked for trade with the bank. The police interviewed Sutcliffe about the note but he was cleared after the police believed his alibi (Jessop). Sutcliffe could have been arrested way earlier as he fit the description of the Ripper and was in police custody multiple times for interviews.

On April 29, 1981, Sutcliffe was put on trial. The trial was not to see if he was guilty or not, it was to decide if Sutcliffe was insane or not. The ruling was a ten-to-two vote ruling that he was insane and had paranoid schizophrenia. The frightening part is that Sutcliffe showed no emotion during his trial, which lasted two weeks. When the judge made his ruling, Sutcliffe was jailed for the rest of his life (Be3). Sutcliffe was not a popular jailmate and was beaten multiple times by his jailmates. In one of the beatings he got stabbed in both of his eyes with a pen, but only lost sight in one of his eyes. Peter Sutcliffe died in prison due to COVID on November 13, 2020. Peter Sutlciffe was a famous serial killer due to how his case turned out and the mass hysteria he caused in England during the seventies.
