Sustained Silent Something: Student Analysis

I feel I learned some interesting strategies for my students. What I want to do in my class is have more Sustained Silent Something. Joni talked about this today and it was interesting. She has her students do something quietly that encourages reading. Anything they want to read they can. I adore this idea because this can entertain even picky students that don’t like to read. I like the idea for increasing the reading time in a week. This is a slow way of helping the students that are far behind. I remember doing partner reading where one reads one page, and the other reads the other page. This is so they do not get tired of reading so quick. It works wonders for my daughter and I, we do it every night. In my practicum class they must be quite for the twenty minutes, and from what my teacher says, she is continuously telling them to be quite, so this is ineffectual SSR. I do like the idea of after they read, to read a book to them. Then they can get the feel for a new book and may find other books by the same author.
One assignment I enjoyed and will implements is his Newsweek reading. Each student must find an interesting article in the newspaper, write three favorite quotes or passages and reflect on them. Then write five things they learned from their article,

Give assignments on the computer for reading. Before assigning a class book to read have the students do a little research. Give them a book title and have them go to a certain website, like Goodreads, and read a summary of the book and a few comments left by other people. Have them write down one or two of their favorite quotes. Then have a class discussion. There is two birds with one stone. They get a preview of what to expect with the book, and you are putting technology to good use. As for students that do not have computers at home, give them time to work during quite time. Accommodate every student to further their reading
