The question of sustainability has been asked and how green these electric vehicles actually are. The sustainability relies on how these vehicles are powered, each of these electric vehicles needs to be charged to actually be used. What is the point of having an electric vehicle where your source of power is still from a pollution causing source? In the United States, 68% of our electricity is supplied by fossil fuels. These fossil fuels are used for power, therefore, these cars are still powered by fossil fuels. However, these vehicles can be considered fully sustainable in the right conditions. If the power is supplied by a 100 percent environmentally friendly method such as wind turbines, then these vehicles are absolutely considered to be good for the environment …show more content…
To get some of these rare materials, non-environmentally procedures are done to mine for these metals. Hard chemicals are used to dissolve clay and sand to find these small quantities of rare metals. Other forms of mining are also used to find these materials. Large machines are used to crush and haul rock around emitting a lot emissions into the air. The way we mine for these minerals cannot be changed. It is the most cost-effective way to obtain these metals. If we stopped mining for these metals, it would make the price on electronics, cars, and other products that rely on this to be astronomical in price (Wade). One way we can solve this is to find other materials that are lightweight, durable and environmentally efficiently to replace these materials and metals. Tesla is a company that does not use rare earth metals for their engines or batteries. By doing so helps boast their argument of a green vehicle.
These Tesla cars also require a large heavy battery made out of precious materials such as lead. Some of these batteries weigh in at over half a ton. These batteries won’t be just thrown into a landfill. Already, 90 percent of vehicle batteries are recycled and almost each battery is made out of 70 percent of recycled materials. Tesla has adapted the same concept where all batteries that return to them go through a recycling process. According to Kurt Kelty, the Director of Energy Storage Systems,
