Left over plant foods were discarded in cleared areas and later discovered these same plants that were thrown had grown. Eventually, people connected the leaving of seed one season to finding of edible plants the next. Farming began when people intentionally saved and planted seeds of their favorite plants (Lewis). The accidental discovery of cultivation of plants spread fast, by eight thousand years ago, people in the Americas were eating kidney beans, peanut butter, lima beans, squash, and potatoes. It wasn’t until the nineteenth century, when the work of Charles Darwin and Gregory Mendel, in evolution and genetics revealing the biological basis of selective breeding, called agriculture (Lewis). Then, in the 1970’s, the introduction of agricultural biotechnology, the process of genetically engineering the food we eat, begins, with the main purpose to improve appearance, flavor, and nutritional content of foods, and ease of cultivation
