In addition, a sample from the story that shows that authors can use suspense in settings is when it says, “His room was as black as pitch with the thick darkness (for the shutters were closed fastened, through fear of robbers), and so I knew that he could not see the opening of the door, and I kept pushing it on steadily, steadily” (Poe 355). This proves that authors can use details to describe settings, which can cause the reader to be suspenseful by describing the room as black and thick darkness and how he kept pushing to door. In conclusion, the symbolism present in the short stories creates a suspenseful feel for the…

“Horror stories are designed to make our pulses race and our skin tingle” ( pg. 90). Horror stories are made so people can get out of their comfort zone and experience something they wouldn't want to in life through a movie, book and plays.
