Suspense In 'The Pedestrian And The Tell-Heart'

Authors can keep you on your toes with their exhilarating and suspenseful stories they draw you into reading. To keep you from being fatigued with reading the book, the authors use different techniques to make you suspicious and want to keep reading. Out of all the techniques authors use to create suspense, some of their tricks include ending the story without saying what happens at the end or using specific details about the setting and actions of a character(s) to create an interesting scene in the reader’s head. In addition, there are two stories that are exemplary examples of authors creating suspense to draw their readers in by incorporating different techniques. In the story The Pedestrian, by Ray Bradbury, is a model of an author creating suspense by ending his story with the reader having a suspicion of what’s going to happen, but doesn’t actually clarify the results at the end of the book . In the end of The Pedestrian it says that a cop had picked up Mr. Mead while he was walking and drove him past a house that was the only house bright inside in the entire city, which was Mr. Meads house. In addition, a sample from the story that shows that authors can use suspense in settings is when it says, “His room was as black as pitch with the thick darkness (for the shutters were closed fastened, through fear of robbers), and so I knew that he could not see the opening of the door, and I kept pushing it on steadily, steadily” (Poe 355). This proves that authors can use details to describe settings, which can cause the reader to be suspenseful by describing the room as black and thick darkness and how he kept pushing to door. From the author inserting that piece of writing it gives the reader an idea of what the room looks like and what’s going to happen
