Suspense In The Book Of Genesis

Improved Essays
Throughout the entire book of Genesis, a sense of suspense is prevalent. The type of suspense created isn’t necessarily the type that creates an aura of impending doom, but the type that is geared towards a reader who analyzes the Bible academically instead of spiritually. This reader actively finds and appreciates the literary devices used in the book of Genesis; specifically the literary device of suspense. In addition, this reader recognizes that the repetitious deceit by the characters causes suspense. They also understand that many of the narratives in Genesis are driven forward by deceitful actions. This being said, it needs to be understood that the deceptions in Genesis can be organized into different subgroups: traps, tests, and lies. …show more content…
According to Dictionary.com, suspense is “a state or condition of mental uncertainty or excitement, as in awaiting a decision or outcome”. This definition certainly helps gain understanding, but it also important to look at suspense from a literary standpoint. Just like there are subgroups of deceit, there are different literary aspects to suspense. One aspect of suspense that will be analyzed further due to its nature in the story of Joseph is dramatic irony. Dramatic irony is when the audience knows something that the characters in the story do not know. This form of irony plays a major role in creating suspense in the Joseph …show more content…
The first subgroup of deceit is a “trap”. This form of deceit has one purpose, to trick another character or group of characters into doing something that they wouldn’t do if they knew the planned outcome of the deceiver(s). An example of this is when Laban tricks Jacob into marrying Leah instead of Rachel, then making Jacob serve another seven years to be married to Rachel. Laban knew that Jacob would not marry Leah purposefully, so using Rachel as an incentive was a trap. The second subgroup of deceit is a “test”. This form of deceit isn’t necessarily used to hurt or trick the “tested” character, but put them in a situation and see how they respond to it. An example of this is when God created the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, but tells man, “... of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die” (Genesis 2:17). Man didn’t know right from wrong, so he ate from the tree, and failed God’s “test”. The final subgroup of deceit is “lying”. This subgroup seems obvious, but it is still important to include. This type of deceit is when one character lies another character for their own benefit. An example of this is when Jacob deceives his father and steals his brother’s blessing. When it comes to the three subgroups of deceit, it is important to understand that while they each have their own

In the Book of Genesis, trickery and deception is demonstrated by characters who are never punished for their behavior, but his actions usually get him further ahead in the story. Characters use to trickery to a means to an end. In Book 22, God commands Abraham to take his son to Mount Moriah and offer him as a sacrifice. “Stay here with the ass; I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you (Genesis 22.5).” Abraham tells his servants to wait for them, and that they will both return, but Abraham’s statement is a lie because the story has nothing to indicate that Abraham thought his son was going to survive the offering which required him to kill his only son.…

Deception is used by both gods and humans to accomplish their goals, whether that be a sinister or positive goal. Though human’s use of deception has created noteworthy Greek myths, the god’s use of deception is more prevalent and relevant in Ancient Greek culture. When examining three examples of god’s deceptive actions, Aphrodite’s, Athena’s, and Prometheus’s, the role for which the gods use deception becomes more clear. These three myths are examples that emphasize how gods usually have similar intentions, employ a heightened sense of deception, and encounter the power of Zeus when enacting the various forms of deception. To begin, Hymn to Aphrodite, specifically lines 45-290 in The Homeric Hymns shows not only Aphrodite’s deception to Anchises but Zeus’s power to deceive Aphrodite with her own influence.…

One specific value of reading World Literature from Antiquity is to understand the power of deceit in that it can be used to influence even the most powerful of people. The book of Genesis is brimming with tales of tricksters and deceit, yet this theme appears, at first glance, to be a contradiction to the morality lessons for which the Bible is known. However, when one examines the stories of Abraham and Tamar, a principle becomes evident: trickery is often the only weapon available to the weak. In Genesis 12:10-13, Abraham is entering Egypt when he decides to trick Pharaoh by claiming his wife Sarah is merely his sister. In this situation, Pharaoh and his whole household are inflicted with disease though they knew nothing of the lie.…

Suspense is an element of fiction building on foreshadowing and other aspects of fiction that creates a tense, anxious, or excitement. I chose the film Silence of the Lambs to describe suspense because this film in particular touched me in a suspenseful way. The basis of the movie in itself is suspenseful; police investigations and attempts at stopping a serial killer who is at large creates an exciting atmosphere. Its themes also create some suspenseful aspects to the film that are also applicable to life. The themes present in this film include gender--the main character is a female FBI agent, making her a minority and a kind of outcast in certain situations, who also faces some harassment due to her gender--and manipulation.…

“How a Good Mystery Can Be” or “What Makes a Good Mystery” From personal experience, mysteries end up becoming repetitive in nature, mirroring aspects from other stories; I often call them, “borrowed stories.” A good mystery is one that creates an environment filled with suspense and relation that entices and involves the audience. Readers must feel as if they are part of plot’s upbringing, becoming detectives themselves, and with the challenges that come with it. In the world created by British author, Dame Agatha Christie, introduces the mystery of “The Third-Floor Flat.” This particular work revolves around the murder of a middle-aged woman in an apartment or flat, hence the title of the story.…

When observing the Hebrew Scriptures, one major theme prevalent in the Book of Genesis is deception. Throughout Genesis, many of the Lord’s prophets or “chosen people,” lie, trick, and deceive people into getting what they want. Whenever the Lord’s prophets deceive people, they are committing an act of sin. As the Ninth Commandment clearly states, “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor” (Exodus 20:16).…
