After the girl throws herself against the rock, indignant with her father, she goes to the witch wanting to become human. She must pay with her voice, but as soon as her voice is taken, she struggles to get to the surface to breathe air. As the readers are left in suspense about whether she is going to become human or not, many authors use this strategy to keep the readers engaged in the story. Suspense is the excitement or tension that readers feel as they wait to find out how the story ends or conflict is resolved. Eckles, the main character, decides he is going to go on a journey to billions of years before his time to hunt dinosaurs for a cost of ten thousand dollars. As the Safari Guide in the Past informs Eckles about the rules he uses foreshadowing by telling him and the others to not stray from the path. This creates suspense by making the readers wonder if one of them will stray off from the path and they'll question what might happen if they do. Another incident of foreshadowing is when the safari guides caution the group saying, "We don't want anyone who panics at the first shot. Six safari leaders were killed last year ,and a dozen hunters"(Bradbury 36). This also creates suspense because it makes the reader question who might panic or who might die on the trip. Lastly, throughout the story the characters bring up the presidential election and how it would be awful if Deutscher won. By casually bringing up the topic about the presidential election this creates suspense because the reader may think about how maybe the outcome of the story might end up with Deutscher being the president instead of Keith.
