The Others, directed, written and scored by Alejandro Amenabar, is a 2001 Spanish-American supernatural gothic horror film, which depicts the isolated life of Grace, her two children, and their omnious servants. Following the conventions associated with many supernatural movies, The Others appears to be merely another commonplace movie as it contains no special elements that would set it apart from the rest upon first sight. However, the viewers’ expectations of a stereotypical movie are startlingly shattered when the true nature of the film is revealed at the end. Throughout the film, it seems as though the family is being hunted by evil spirits. However, the truth is is that the family and the servants are actually the intruders haunting, another living family. Although this fact is revealed at the very end of the movie, it is hinted at through the use of foreshadowing, which are mostly ignored by the viewers throughout the film, to give the an uneasy mood of suspense and tension.

Nevetheless, this feature of the film does not make the twist any less unexpected, but just makes the film full of tension without giving anything away. The fact that the whole film supports the ending makes it worth it to watch the film multiple times to catch all the indicators.
