Susanne Glaspell's Trifles

Trifles by Susanne Glaspell focuses on morality and justice. But if you dig a little deeper into the play it shows the roles of men and women in society during that time, along with the effects of loneliness and revenge. Minnie symbolized a caged bird that is forced to hide her beauty, not to sing, and is isolated from the community. Glaspell used the bird cage to signify that Minnie had very limited space to do as she pleased. Her husband took away her femininity; the pretty dresses she used to wear, her singing, etc. He caged her in the house and took away all the things she loved. The idea of patriarchy is present throughout the play. It was an extremely common concept that was widely accepted back then, it may not have been called sexism, but the …show more content…
A woman’s only place is in the home and raising the children. (Patriarchy describes a general structure in which men have power over women. They are the head of the family unit, leader of social groups, and heads of government.) People still held onto their traditional beliefs that the women can’t contribute to anything in society aside from household duties. The women are disregarded as unimportant trifles. Mr. Henderson’s and the other men’s biggest mistake was assuming the women’s identity came solely from the relations to men, instead of from the individual qualities as females. When Minnie murdered her husband it was the ultimate rejection of her husbands imposed identity and state of being. Aside from Minnie Wright the women of the play had no first names. They took their husbands names which is a very important statement imposed by the author. The men belittled and doubted the abilities of the women. They believed that the women were too small minded and flighty to worry about important things like the investigation. When in the end it was the women who found the motive, but decided to keep it from the

Each human being has been taught the art of individualism. Civilization after civilization has manipulated the life of its members through selling the idea of independence and self-sufficiency. Creating social taboos and setting labels that serve as the stigma of the community, are some of the techniques use to oppress individuals as components of the greater scheme that is society. The belief of individualism, the big banner that says it is fine to be different, has become the current most followed idea of the free world. The question is whether or not such individualism exists or if it is nothing more than a created fantasy used to shape the existence of a race?…

It is a known fact that both men and women had different tasks in society. In both plays “A Doll’s House” and “Trifles”, it is obvious how women are not treated as equals by the men. The play “A Doll’s House”, which takes place in a small town in Norway, tells the “happy” life of Nora and her husband, Trovald. Then the other play “Trifles”, which takes place in Nebraska, USA, tells how the men, and the women accompanying them react differently to the life the murder suspect lived. Even though these two plays are in different continents, it is easily noticeable how men look down on women.…

The story could be considered as having began the day prior when Mr. Wright was killed or many years before that when Mrs. Wright married him and changed so much. “Trifles” has a climactic structure as is evidenced by restricted characters, locale, and scenes as well as a plot that starts very late in the story. Protagonist “Trifles” is different from many other plays in the fact that the main character of the play, is never actually seen. Mrs. Minnie Wright is the main character.…

This feministic classic entails a jury of female peer 's intervention with justice. Critics believe this Tale was based on a real murder trial in which female Jurors were not allowed to serve. This commentary on the surface, can be viewed as a simple detective story, but can unravel into deeper meaning. From the text, I derived that the Men in the story viewed their wives as weaker figures in the household, but this commentary showcases their power in numbers. The men in this story are unknowingly deceived by their wives, ultimately missing the clues to the murder.…

Minnie Wright in the play Trifles by Susan Glaspell and the Narrator in the short story “They Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman relate to each other through the oppressive lifestyles that they live caused by their controlling husbands. Both women are secluded from society by their husbands but for different reasons. In both Trifles and the “Yellow Wallpaper” one can see that there is a strict divide between female characters and male characters. In both stories, the women attempt to escape their oppression, but with negative outcomes. The main contrast is that Minnie uses a direct assault against her husband, she is proactive in her fight against oppression while the Narrator retreats into her own delusion.…

Trifles gives a perfect example of a classical linear plot with exposition, an inciting incident, rising action, climax, and finally falling action. Although, most of the play takes place in the rising action the inciting incident and climax and climax are arguable the most important aspects of a play. In Trifles specifically where the inciting incident that spurs the action throughout the rest of the play has been up for interpretation since the play was written. I personally think that the inciting incident is when we realize that Mr. Wright is dead. This occurs on the top of the second page of the play when Mr. Hale is describing the events the prior morning.…

Each play has a character that lies just to prove a point, to prove that they are strong. Although Mrs. Wright does not appear in the play, her character was a representation of all women that may have been oppressed or mistreated by men in one way or another. Mrs. Wright was tired of being mistreated and suppressed by her husband so she decided to take matters into her own hands which was not typical of women back then. Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale also took matters into their own hands in their own way, the women who were once seen as a joke and considered to be not valuable to society were the same ones who ended up solving this murder mystery that the men were no where close to solving. Although they all played very different parts in the play, they all had one thing in common. They all rebelled against the men in some way shape or form; it was an act of women empowerment and escaping women’s…

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm was popularly known as the “Grimms Brothers”, were characterized as one of the most dramatic writers in the 19th century. They were categorized by their short, simple sentences, colloquial language, and their well-organized approach to craft writings. Their writing was entitled Little Snow White, it was released in 1937 and it was about Snow White, a princess who falls into a deep, death-like rest after taking a bite from a poisoned apple. My impression about this narrative was an innocent little girl who had her step-mother hating her because of her beauty and kind-heart. The Little Snow-White by the Grimms Brothers is a fairy tale that reveals the goodness and the beauty of a little princess who is loved by all, however,…

The Sweet Girl Graduate by Sarah Curzon focuses on this specific representation of gender where the heroine of the play is attempting to comply to societal norms by cross-dressing in order to receive a higher education. The heroine is obliging to the gender hierarchy that exists, and as a result, this portrays the heroine as someone who is attempting to break away from male dominance, while at the same time accepting it as women were expected to. The representation of gender roles in The Sweet Girl Graduate creates a contradictory perception of what women are meant to achieve in the play, and this is due to the portrayal of the heroine as a free individual; however, at the same time she is subjected to follow the status quo forced…

For a woman in the early 1900s, her role (for the most part) was immensely evident in that time period. She was to be the caretaker of the children, the one who slaved over the stove, and the one who kept the house neat and tidy. Since the man of the household was the one working, doing labor outside, and bringing in the income, women were looked at as inferior to the men. In Susan Glaspell’s Trifles, she brings light to some of the gender issues in her society, and shows the different ways of problem solving and thinking between men and women. The conflict in Trifles is derived from the expectations, criticism, and underestimation placed on women by the society (and especially men) in the early 1900s (or in this case the expectations for Mrs.…

Drama Essay “Trifles” by Susan Glaspell, is centered in 1916 and is a one-act play, which includes parts of what the women’s suffrage movement was all about. The drama from Glaspell conveys the story of a murder mystery concerning a married couple of Mrs. Wright and her husband, the murder victim, John Wright; this story also integrates the attitude of society at the time concerning women, their social position observed as beneath that of a male. Minnie Wright, the protagonist, remains concealed during the drama. Minnie is unable to defend herself in person; instead, the exposure of the circumstances of her married life must be used to defend her. “Trifles” demonstrates the prejudiced attitude usually accepted among men regarding women in…
