Susan Mim Spaet Biography

On November 17, 1973, at noon, Susan Miriam Spaet, the youngest of the three girls, was born at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Scarsdale, New York. Susan was born by c-section and didn’t meet her mother, Mona Spaet, until a few hours later when the nurses asked the tired woman, “Is there anything we can do for you?” Then her mother could hold her little five pound, ten ounce, ninteen inch long girl. Her father, Theodore Spaet, was a hematologist and research scientist. In the fourth grade she began to write an autobiography of friendly, good natured self and her life as she remembered it. In the first chapter, she recalls getting bitten by her dog, Rex, when she was a year and a half. Her mother ran to comfort her after she heard her young daughter’s scream ring through the house. This led to her first words, “dog” and “good”. Despite this incident, she continues to love her dogs today. She was raised to be a bit of a nonconformist, but as many people do, she had a long birthday list. She would go through the Hammacher Schlemmer catalog circling the many things she wanted. Before she got her job in Middlebury, she did a year long intensive program at Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1996, which she ended up hating. This program included student teaching and from the classrooms she was in, she learned some helpful tips about how to keep your classroom engaging. Susan loves to make bad puns and corny jokes, but that is something that her students enjoy. She strives to show students how important history is and how we essentially cannot live without it. She is pleased to find that the students at Middlebury are much nicer than at her high school. At MUHS, she teaches World History classes, AP U.S. History, Herstory and Physcology, and is always trying to teach in creative ways. However, Royal History, battles, and law are not her
