Personal Narrative: I Want To Pursue A Career Path

As Dr. Steve Maraboli once said, “You were put on this earth to achieve your greatest self, to live out your purpose, and to do it courageously”. Setting one’s heart and mind to something is a big step in anyone’s life, and the things learned on that journey toward accomplishing something can transition a child into a mature adult. Susan Komen for the cure is a non-profit donation foundation that raises money for cancer awareness by providing a 5k marathon. When I heard this race was scheduled in St. Louis, I had my heart set on crossing the finish line whether I would be first or last. My aunt Trena, who had earlier that year lost her life to ovarian cancer, was my motivation for running this race. I realized that I could not just transition from a couch potato to running a 5k after running once. I had to be patient and learn how to pace myself. I had to find the perfect balance in my training so I could avoid pushing myself too hard and not pushing myself enough. Before this experience, I would always push myself too hard in my schoolwork and other activities I participated in. I would cram in studying the night before the test and get frustrated with myself if I did not understand the material right away. While training myself for the race, I learned that you couldn’t do that with running. You could injure yourself, which could only be more of a setback that could prevent you from reaching your goal. Every day I pushed myself for a faster time and to run longer. Likewise, in my schoolwork, I pushed myself to study well in advance before the test and gradually build up on what I was studying every night. All in all, running has taught me that sometimes patience can go a long way in order to succeed in whatever I have my heart set
