Most people have had experiences or people in their life that held them back from doing what they truly wanted. This makes the poem “Housewife” by Susan Fromberg Schaeffer, relatable to most people. Susan conveys a powerful message through this poem, which is that everyone should follow their dreams and live their life the way they want to. One example of symbolism in the poem is when the housewife refers to herself as “the rib” and that it “had cracked.” “The rib” is referring to Adam’s rib in the creation story, which was used to make Eve. The housewife says this because in that moment, she finally feels free and alive. Man’s control over her breaks and she feels like she is free to make her own choices and decisions. She realizes that she is capable of making her own decisions, but is still attached to the house. Another example of symbolism in the poem is when the housewife says, “and see the day open its fingers to disclose the stone - which hand? And the stone in both.” The stone in both hands symbolizes how predictable the housewife’s days have become. It is like her life is on auto pilot and she is no longer in control. She does the same routine everyday so her life has become boring and predictable. She needs to change that routine and take control of her life. If she continues living her life the way she is, her life will end with her having regrets. The symbolism in this poem emphasizes how important it is that the housewife makes big changes in her life.
