Susan Cain, speaker in “The Power of Introverts” educates us by explaining that introverts in our society should not be frowned upon as they are not like their counterparts, extroverts. She concludes, stating that just like extroverts, introverts have their own special abilities and reasons on how they are just as important to our society. Similarly, Frank Portman’s novel, King Dork, features these types of people and they face social problems which leads them through different paths but ends up the best for everyone. Overviewing these two sources, they run together on how introverts are needed and maintain balance in our society. When bringing out one of her books she had packed with her, was asked “Why are you being so mellow?”. She had realized since then that her quiet ways weren’t accepted by everyone and later in life started doing more extroverted things. She had later used examples of great leaders and public figures to prove that they would describe themselves as modest and reserved even when having to put themselves into the spotlight, knowing they are doing the right thing. Evidentially, she adds that introversion is not parallel with being ‘shy’. Correspondingly our protagonist is more than ‘shy’, he is considered an introvert. Primarily, you can note that that his anxiety for calling Deanna or Celeste, troubles with publicly speaking before performing with his band at the Festival of Lights, and cutting conversations short in hopes to not be an annoyance. This is not because he has any type mental problem or lacking social skills. Backtracking, Cain goes in-depth on how introvert personality differs from an extrovert, in stimulating social environments and belief systems in group thinking. “When psychologists look at the lives of the most creative people, what they find are people who are very good at exchanging ideas and advancing ideas, but who also have a serious streak of introversion in them.” (Cain) Thomas had spent most of the time alone even in the company of Sam
