With the increase in the number of states that afford complete autonomy to NPs, there seems to be some professional tension with the expanded role of the NP. The caller Dr. Richard who identified himself as an OBGYN who complained that NPs made a lot of misdiagnosis and were not qualified to adequately treat patients after only 2 years of advanced education. As in all professions, there will always be those who practice at different levels of strengths and weaknesses. There are cases of doctors, NPs, lawyers, etc. who sometimes gets it wrong, that does not mean that all in the profession will get it wrong. Instead of viewing NP’s as a treat to their profession, physicians should learn to work collaboratively with NPs as a team in an effort to provide the best care possible to patients.

To improve consumers’ awareness, Nurse Practitioners need to individually do their part. In clinical practices I’ve seen where patients refer to the NP as a MD without being corrected. We as future NPs must take ownership, and proudly claim our profession. Also, state laws governing ANP practice need to be standardized so that NPs can practice equally from state to state. By organizing community health events, the NP can increase awareness of the profession and highlight the efforts and the ability of the NP to treat chronic illnesses, educate consumers on how to prevent illness
