Daniel W. Shrigley once said, “In a survival situation, it’s do or die. The ones that take action, using knowledge and common sense live!” Imagine this, you are on an island with several other people and no given resources. Maybe you’ve seen the television show Survivor where people face this problem. The book, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding and the show Survivor have many similarities with one difference. In both Lord of the Flies and Survivor there is a chief or leader of the group. This individual has a lot of control over how the group acts and thinks and typically ends up abusing his or her power. It sometimes is difficult to get everyone to do their part. In the beginning of the book, everyone agreed on gathering water and in chapter five when Ralph finds out people are not doing their job he gets angry. He calls a meeting to discuss the issue, “We were going to have water brought from the stream and left in those coconut shells under fresh leaves. So it was for a few days. Now there is no water. The shells are dry.” This shows after a little while when people slack off it results in tension within the group and this is typically the cause of fights in Survivor. The boys and Survivor characters have to deal with others not always doing their job. The only difference between the two is that one wants to stay on the island and the other wants off. Survivor characters want to stay on the island and win money and in Lord of the Flies most of the characters want to be rescued. In chapter two Ralph tries to tell the other boys the importance of a fire.
