Summary
Suicide is a serious problem in the U.S., especially when it comes to dealing with teenage suicide. Teen suicide most likely happens because a lot of teens have emotional problems and don’t seek help. Whenever they do seek help it’s usually from friends and never from an authority. Surviving the Teens is a program that deals with high school youth, and its focus is being aware of the students who are at high risk of ending their lives. This program did series of studies, looking for certain behaviors among teens that lead to recognizing whether there were possibilities of suicide attempts. Once the program completed the studies and got the results, if for any chance a student was emotionally troubled, the program was then able to notify,

They get different results each time the study is done, allowing them to compare the new results to the previous results. The research did provide enough information to anyone who would like to replicate it, but, it was a very extended research with plenty of information that was not all that necessary to include. There were some factors that did not relate to the objective of the specific research, for example, it mentioned several characteristics of the participants. It included the gender, age, grade, and race/ethnicity of the students and the percentages that each group had, which made the results more complicated to understand. However, the added factors were acceptable because the study of suicide prevention is a serious subject matter that should be abundant with information. If the program wants to produce a change when addressing suicide prevention, they should find and include all the information they can get their hands on. The researchers did use appropriate data collection, but they were somewhat challenging to follow. Even though the charts were accurate in their calculations, they didn’t make it easy to comprehend what some numbers or letters meant, and how some percentages were calculated. It’s far too time consuming for an individual who is not familiar with analyzing charts. The study could have been done differently regarding the percentages and explanation of certain letters and numbers on the charts presented. Putting all negative comments aside, the Surviving Teens program did succeed in grabbing the public’s attention, especially schools. Per the study “suicide is currently the third leading cause of death for youth aged 10-19,” so it’s very important that more programs such as these come about. It’s a contribution to the field of psychology because suicide is a mental health problem and psychology is the

In his essay he established his belief in what the chief issues that need to be addressed in order to improve American high schools.…

When dealing with suicidal adolescents, the first and foremost step is to encourage prevention. One way this can be done is to encourage help-seeking behavior. “Efforts to promote help seeking are among the panoply of interventions that may diminish risk for suicide ideation, attempts and/or death” (Klimes-Dougan et al., p.83, 2012). Help-seeking is a simple idea but a difficult thing for the individual experiencing suicidal ideation. The reasons making help-seeking behavior difficult are: it requires self-awareness of a problem, a willingness to seek assistance, and social norms that encourage such behavior (Rickwood et al., 2007).…

In an effort to elaborate on the first category, one of the first articles that will be examined is “Preliminary Effectiveness of Surviving the Teens® Suicide Prevention and Depression Awareness Program on Adolescents ' Suicidality and Self-Efficacy in Performing Help-Seeking Behaviors,” by King, Strunk, and Sorter (2011). In this article, King, Strunk, and Sorter(2011) gave 1,030 high school students in Greater Cincinnati schools a 3-page survey at pretest, immediate posttest, and 3-month follow-up (p.581). The result was that students were significantly less likely at 3-month follow-up than at pretest to be considering suicide, to have made a suicidal plan or have attempted suicide during the past 3 months.…
