Surviving The Applewhites Analysis

Decent Essays
Stephanie S. Tolan, the author of Surviving the Applewhites, could have chosen any musical for the applewhites to do but she chose for them to do The Sound of Music as a musical because of how the theme and family compares to the movie. The Von Trapp family had lots of order in the beginning, weren’t allowed to have fun, and had lots of rules. This was very different to the Applewhites who had very little order, respected each other's creativity, and didn’t have many rules at all. Something similar about the families was that someone came to their family and started to live with them. Jake came to the Applewhites and Maria come to the Von Trapps. In both The Sound of Music and Surviving the Applewhites someone needed a change for the better.

In the article, “In Washington State, Picker Shortage Threatens Apple Boom”, Anna King wants readers to become aware of the enduring apple crisis occurring in Washington. She explains how the supply of apples has recently diminished because of bad weather in locations like Michigan, New York, Canada, and Europe. Particularly China’s middle class is keeping the country’s apples at bay. Despite such terrible production elsewhere, Washington has produced an abundance of apples compared to its average, but the amount of workers present to pick the apples is extremely low. Part of this problem is because usual migrant employees are unable to cross the border due to violence and increased security.…

In addition to the Von Trapp and Applewhite families helping each other, other people also helped them in their endeavor. The nuns at the Abbey helped the Von Trapp family hide from the SS, along with various other friends or employees of the Applewhites helping build the theater and/or help with the production of the musical. Despite the similarities the Von Trapp and Applewhite family have, there is one difference that is extremely noticeable between them. While the Applewhite family has a mass amount of chaos with everyone doing their own thing, the Von Trapp family is very regimented and is run by Captain Von Trapp on a very strict code and manner, treating his children as military personnel after his wife had died. Since the Applewhites and Von Trapp’s have notable similarities, I believe that The Sound of Music was used as the play Randolph directed because The Sound of Music and Surviving the Applewhites have similar themes, such as change and acceptance, due to the similarities Maria and Jake…

The article that I chose this week was You Paid How Much For That Apple? In this article, Elizabeth Dunn discusses the reasoning behind the cost of Honeycrisp Apples compared to that of other apples. 20 years ago, David Bedford cross bred different apples and established what is known today as the Honeycrisp Apple. The Honeycrisp Apples were so good that they are known in today’s society as a “price phenomenon” compared to other apples on the market because of their great taste (Dunn, 2013). The high price of Honeycrisp Apples is contributed to a few different aspects in today’s market.…

After reading the article “Apple vs. The United States Government,” I agree with Apple’s stance. The San Bernardino shooting was a very tragic event that occurred last December and I do understand where the FBI is coming from, but they cannot expect Apple to risk the privacy of their customers.. There are many reasons why I agree with Apple’s stance. Smartphones have become a very sufficient part of people's lives, and we depend on them for almost everything. We have put forth our trust in these phones, by relying on them to keep all of our private information.…

After reading and viewing the mob mentality pieces, I conclude that mob mentality lead people to disgraceful acts that they normally wouldn’t do towards black people. For instance, Smith states that in a mob individuals feel less guilty for committing a crime because there are more people involved. Also, in Beitler’s photograph, the crowd doesn’t look phased by the lynching. They are smiling and pointing, and look as though they are laughing at the two Negroes being lynched. It states in the NPR Radio Diary (“Strange Fruit: Anniversary of Lynching”) that the photographer (Beitler) printed multiple copies of his lynching photo to sell as souvenirs.…

Apple proves that being secretive holds power. The success of using the tactic of withholding information from consumers has been proven time and time again to phenomenally increase sales each time their product hits the stores (Kinicki & Williams, 2013). Whenever Apple comes out with new product people are filled with a strong desire to want to know what was made they scramble to stores to buy its latest gadget (Eadicicco, 2014). The power of secrecy is a good marketing strategy for Apple; they do not spend vast amounts of money like its competitors did on advertising. The business strategy's goal was to create mystery about their product line which results in massive crowds at retail stores and the end results equals high profits for Apple.…

Maria from "The Sound of Music" directed by Robert Wise and Naomi from "Going Where I'm Coming From" by Naomi Shihab Nye are both very brave and stand up for themselves and for others for what is right. While comparing Maria and Naomi, they both seem to be very well driven, have confidence, and they know what is morally right and wrong. Maria is well driven because when she went to the Von Trapp's house she noticed that the "captain" the seven children's dad was treating the children like they were in the army. Naomi is also well driven because when she found out that the teacher for the 1st graders hit them with a ruler, she made a report in the newspaper telling the people everything that the teacher did. Maria is confident because after…

The film director, Tim Burton, uses several different techniques throughout his films to show his unique sense of style and ideas to compliment his interesting and crazy personality. The stylistic techniques that Burton uses are the music, shots, and lighting to achieve the effects of mood, tone, and a sense of fantasy. First of all, Burton’s use of music, mainly diegetic, in his films help the audience to be engaged and understand the emotions within the characters. For example, in his film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, there were several songs sung by the Oompa-loompas during the scenes where one of the children were in trouble for misbehaving and disobeying the rules that Willy Wonka has set for his factory. As the Oompa-loompas sing, the mood changes to being mischievous and funny as they all make fun of the rude children.…

Unlike in the novel 1984, people were watched through telescreens and were allowed no individuality. People think having thoughts is not a privilege but compared to the novel 1984 it is. In the novel having thoughts was not allowed, Winston took a risk by buying a diary and keeping his personal thoughts in it. It was very dangerous seeing that the government could have come in and killed him at any time.…

Apple’s 1984 has proven timeless in its visual appeal. The striking use of color and lack thereof, does a beautiful job of differentiating the oppressors and the oppressed in cold grayish blues from the courageous heroin, raging against the system, in vivid red and white. The ability of the establishing shots and close ups to capture a dystopian world and its sickly looking population, ranting tyrant, and technicolored heroin, appealed to the viewers’ instinctive interest in the human factor when it first aired and continues to resonate with me more than thirty years later. While the multi-colored Apple logo set against a black background is simple, it is a powerful final visual, made memorable by continuing in the same vein of high contrast…
