Lord of the Flies is a very well-known fiction written by William Golding, it is also a very dark and evil based story. The novel is about a group of British boys who had a plane crash and ended up being on an island in the Pacific ocean. They are forced to work with each other in order to survive and get rescue. Ultimately, they failed to do so and the boys are separated into two groups which also created civilization and savagery on the island as they are away from the adults and no one is looking after them but themselves. As a results, there are three major symbols which are the conch shell, Piggy’s glasses and the signal of fire that really change from an originate civilization to savagery group of boys. In the novel, the conch shell represents and symbolizes civilization and order. It was found by Ralph and Piggy and it was used to call assemblies and only the person holding the conch shell is allow to speak. From this quote, “We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us-”(Page 12), it shows that the conch is the only tool that can call everyone to an assembly, it also shows that it is connected to civilization. From this quote,”He can hold it when he’s speaking and won’t be interrupted.” says Ralph (Page 31), it shows the power of the conch shell and no one can take the power away from you as long as you have the conch shell on your hands. It represents rescue and destruction. In the beginning of the story, Ralph wanted to keep a signal fire going in case a ship passes near the island ,they will notice the boys and it shows a sense of civilization. However, when the fire starts to burn out of control, this shows that the fire is becoming savage. Later on the story, Jack thinks that the signal fire is not as important as surviving on the island, so he decided to make a group for hunting on the island. From this quote, “Rescue? Yes, of course! All the same, I’d like to catch a pig first-”(Page 74) , it shows that Jack really doesn’t care about being rescue and keeping the fire alive all the time. Instead, he is more focused on surviving on the island. On the other hand, Jack mostly uses the fire to cook meat and something that unifies them together. Towards the end of the novel, Jack and his hunting team come to steal from the fire from Ralph’s group on the beach. At last, a ship finally notices the boys as there is a blazing fire going on in the jungle and Jack’s hunter group was trying to hunt Ralph down which really shows a very savagery moves from them. Finally, they all got rescued by the Golding’s portrayal of the naval officers. Overall, the signal fire shows a side of civilization and savagery. It also shows hope and destruction, a way to get rescue or a way to survive on the
