The short story The Most Dangerous Game, by Richard Cornell is about survival and reveals that when a human’s life is at risk, they are able to think logically because one wrong decision could be fatal. When Rainsford first met General Zaroff, he claimed he was not a murderer. For example, he states, “Thank you, I’m a hunter not a murderer” (Cornell 14). This quote conveys that Rainsford had a certain mindset about killing others. But his opinion clearly changed by the end of the story. This is significant because Rainsford did not let his opinion get in the way of surviving. He looked at the bigger picture and thought rationally about his predicament. Then, Rainsford was going to attack Zaroff in the jungle. In fact, “Rainsford’s impulse was

General Zaroff from " The most dangerous game" is a very disturbing character. One way to describe his disturbing personality is how cunning he is. For example, when Zaroff shows his hospitality towards Rainsford to only kill Rainsford in a cruel game of hunting. Not only is Zaroff extremely cunning, but also very inhumane, another unsettling trait about Zaroff. General Zaroff lures people to Ship-Trap island, giving them a place to stay, and rest at his home.…

In the book The call of the wild, it is argued if “survival of the fittest” is displayed. In one of the first senses, curly, a sled dog, is killed by a multitude of other dogs. She did not fight back hard enough and died. This would be a good example of survival of the fittest because it shows if your not willing to fight you will be killed. Another example is when Dave is having a heart problem and is struggling with running by the sled.…

He didn’t want to take part in the hunt, but he knew he had to do whatever it took to defeat Zaroff because he didn’t want to die such a shameful death, but more importantly, beat Zaroff at his own game. Trying to maintain his civility, Rainsford had to play Zaroff’s game in order to survive. This conflict between man versus man was very tense. Both men wanted to deem themselves as the ultimate hunter and did whatever they could to win the hunt. Coming from two men sitting at the dinner table eating, now, to two men in the jungle trying to kill each other is very dramatic and illustrates the overwhelming conflict between man versus man in “The Most Dangerous Game.”…

After the final day of the hunt, Rainsford sneaks up on General Zaroff and kills him saying “‘I am still a beast at bay’” (14). Rainsford is in a unique situation because even though he falls off of the ship on his own, he is manipulated on to the island and is being forced to do the hunt. Even though he wins, Rainsford knows that General Zaroff is unpredictable and can’t be trusted not to kill him later or want to play again. The killing of General Zaroff can be dismissed as self-defense, which according to Google is “the defense of one's person or interests, especially through the use of physical force, which is permitted in certain cases as an answer to a charge of violent crime” (1).…

As stated earlier, Rainsford perceives Zaroff to be a civilized, generous person because of what he has and how he seems to be helping Rainsford after his incident in the ocean. As Zaroff explains what the most dangerous game is, Rainsford is genuinely interested in what he has to say, but when Zaroff discloses the animal, Rainsford is shocked. Rainsford is wholly against this, because he believes that hunting people is not like hunting animals, but that what “... [Zaroff speaks] of is murder” (Connell 13). Rainsford loses his regard for Zaroff because he is a murderer, and the amount of money he has does not affect that.…

Survival of a nuclear apocalypse has long been ingrained in American culture. In “’Survival is Your Business’: Engineering Ruins and Affect in Nuclear America,” Joseph Masco argues that the Unite States government used tactics during the Cold War to incite a level of fear in the American population about a possible nuclear war. Masco writes, “I show that the early Cold War state sought explicitly to militarize U.S. citizens through contemplating the end of the nation-state, creating in the process a specific set of ideas and images of collective danger that continue to inform American society in powerful and increasingly complex ways” (362). According to Masco’s argument, the government attempted to use this fear of a possible war to convince Americans that survival was possible after an attack and that retaining order was crucial after such an attack.…
