The truth is, suffering is a fundamental part of livelihood. However, once a new meaning is found in suffering, survival becomes the best option to stay hopeful as it allows one to take revenge and gain success. In the novel “The Marrow Thieves” by Cherie Dimaline, the struggle to survive and the importance of staying hopeful and not give up is pivotal for the lives of Frenchie, a sixteen year old, who has lost his brother, Mitch, and his mother to the Recruiters as well as his companions as they are being hunted for their bone marrow, which carries the ability to dream. Hope is made possible for Frenchie and his companions in impossible situations as they figure out the secret to defeat the marrow thieves while acquiring the knowledge to survive. …show more content…
However, once Frenchie goes on a mission to reunite his family, he begins to branch out into wanting to find other survivors as well. Hamlet does the same when he accepts the fencing challenge Osric delivers him, knowing that the entire Danish royal family will end up dead which then will allow Fortinbras to take the crown for himself. Hamlet knows that Fortinbras’ determination to become king will bring success to the kingdom as well as hope to the people, which is why is it is worth it for him to sacrifice the royal family’s lives. Similarly, Minerva decides that it is best to sacrifice herself to the Recruiters who has been following them for a while so that the rest of her group can continue to survive and gain hope despite her not being there to witness it …show more content…
As Frenchie and his companions keep a steady pace for eight days since RiRi died, they suddenly hear a sound making them realize that it must be the Recruiters. Miig decides that it is best to quickly find a hiding spot as they end up finding an old barn nearby. As they situate themselves in the barn, they decide that it is time to go to bed. However, in the middle of the night, Frenchie suddenly wakes up and sees Minerva holding her finger to her lips signing him to be quiet as the Recruiters take her away. The group members all wake up as they begin “… understanding the weight of what had happened, taking in that Minerva had moved the ladder sometime in the night, before the Recruiters woke [them]. Understanding that she sacrificed herself and allowed [them] to remain hidden … ” (Dimaline 151). During the night, Minerva decides to move the ladder away from the loft of the barn because knows the Recruiters have been following them and she wants the group to have the highest possible chance of not being found. When Minerva hears the Recruiters, she quickly understands that they will either find them all or that she can just give herself away so that the rest of her companions can go on and continue to survive.
