The littluns were the first ones to mention a beast that was on the island, but what they did not realize was that the beast was within the “tribe” its started off with Jack, Jack was the one that started killing pigs and convincing everyone else to do it. He was not completely in wrong for this action because he wanted to eat other things beside fruits that did not fill them up. As the author states ,“Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!__” The whole group of boys were so occupied with killing the beast that everyone was starting to believe in it; they did not stop to realize that they were killing Simon alive. The boys were become savages and at this point they did not think twice about their decisions everyone was involved in the death of Simon. They never stopped to listen to the little boy on the floor crying in pain because the believed they were doing good for the “tribe” by killing the beast. The beast began with only being the imagination of the littlun ones but instead the beast was with in the children which was not discovered till chapter 9 of Lord of the Flies. All the boys had to learn how to survival without letting the other find their weakness. For instance,“The "civilizing instinct" of a man urging him to behave lawfully, follow rules, act morally and the feral instinct inciting him to act brutally, become violent and a selfish breaker of rules run parallel in this novel with the ultimate result of the feral instinct gaining expression by splintering the thin thread of civilization.” ( Anjum Fatima et al. 124). The only boy they tried keeping civilization was Ralph because he was so used to a routine and he disliked feeling dirty and not being able to wash his teeth. William Golding helps us realize that all though the other kids did not mind being dirty it was it big problem for Ralph. Ralph was started to get haitst back that he would get in trouble for at home because it was not civilized and proper. “Thy were bitten down to the quick though he could not remember when he had restarted this habit nor any time when he indulged it. Be sucking my thumb next.” (Golding 82).
