Creative- For an example from APULL, I try to avoid essays based off of clichés or other people’s ideas, instead creating essays by thinking about what I got out of the book and the parts that I personally believed were deserving of deeper analysis. Outside of school and writing, I use my creativity in my extracurriculars; I am an excellent French Horn player and have achieved the rank of Honor Thespian for my commitment and contributions to the theatre program here at Edina, bringing my love of dance and experience on the Hip Hop Dance Team to help choreograph many of the dance numbers seen this year in In The Heights. I also love drawing and crafting things out of paper and whatever other materials I have available,

I am extremely proud of my grades this year, but more than that I am proud of the work ethic and learning skills I have acquired. One would think that studying for tests was pretty straightforward, but I didn’t figure out how to actively learn information until about halfway through tenth grade; I just kind of wished for the best, and it worked out well enough that I never had to put in the extra work to study. Although it took a bit of trial and error to get to the best way for me personally to study and learn, I feel that I have finally found one that works and works well. APULL has been the only class this year that has been significantly different from any of my other classes. All of my other academic classes are fairly predictable: essentially mindless, just memorize the information and you’ll be fine. I am proud that I improved my previous English performance from the five-paragraph essay and its minimal though requirements to the essays I have written this year, which have ended up feeling less like completing an assignment and more like actual writing. I feel much more confident in my writing skills and that the ideas that I am expressing come from a well thought out and thorough

This paper was the culmination of all of the skills that I learned throughout the year and the paper where I finally learned how to apply all of the corrections I have received throughout the year. I feel that I had a really strong analysis of my poem, made easier by the fact that I chose a poet and poem that I find absolutely beautiful and captivating. When looking for a poem, I read the entire New and Selected Poems Vol. 1 because I felt that if I stopped after finding some that would work, I would miss out on poems that I liked even more. I had many poems marked that all work well for an analysis, but I ultimately chose my poem because I loved the energy and sorrow and joy and peace and how they all contrasted with each other for a breathtaking overall effect. The focus on nature and discussion of mortality in this poem brings a power to them that I couldn’t help but write about. Regarding my writing process for any essay, I make sure that I understand the work that I am writing my paper on and then begin to think about how the prompt that I am writing for intersects with the parts I find important in the work I am writing about. Knowing the details and pieces of evidence that I want to include in my essay and what I want to say, I come up with a general outline and then think of a basic thesis that evolves as my writing progresses. After writing a rough draft, I print the essay out and edit it by

On the first day of class, I felt pretty confident about my level of skills as a writer, but little did I know there were a lot of aspects in my writing that could be improved. As time progressed and we learned more about colloquial language and little things I could change in my essays to further advance and improve my writing. Now, I feel even more confident about my writing and know that all of these little changes I can make in my writing create a better flow of ideas and a higher level of formality. I feel that throughout this semester I have been greatly challenged as a writer and have advanced the most that I ever have in writing within such a short period of time. I have put in a lot time and effort into this class in order to create…

My life began to spiral downward before fifth grade began. I found myself an endless loop over summer vacation of waking up, experiencing the day as a blur, sleep, then repeat. This drove me to discover a new way to spend my day. On the television I noticed a recurring advertisement for a game called ‘World of Warcraft’. At first I instilled the mindset that I could spend my time pragmatically but eventually I succumbed to boredom.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

When I originally came to America, I was terrible at writing. I improved very quickly in my speaking, listening, and reading skills, but writing was much harder for me because in South Korea, I never had any writing assignments during middle and high school; therefore, I never had any real chance to improve my writing skills. Furthermore, creating concrete thesis statements has always been one of the hardest aspects of writing a paper for me. I have struggled to narrow down my opinion to a specific thesis; my thesis statements have always been too vague. Also, since my speaking has improved the most, I use a lot of informal language.…

This year, I worked towards two goals: to pass the AP exam and to get a 90% or above in this class. I passed the AP exam without a doubt and unless this paper I am writing receives a grade below 72%, I should achieve that goal too. I am not aiming for that, however, as I try to go beyond what I need. My work and work ethic in this class prove that I deserve at least a 90% to finish the year off with. First of all, I find it hard to believe I would deserve anything below an A after getting an A every quarter so far (and not an 89.5% that just happens to round up either).…

A survey is used to receive information and feedback needed in planning and program improvement (Thayer-hart et al., 2010). Creating and implementing a survey is a systematic process of collecting information on a certain topic by asking individuals questions and generalizing the results to groups expressed by the respondents (Thayer-hart et al., 2010). Designing a survey includes five steps: design survey process, develop questions, test and train, collect data, and analyze the data. The type of survey used for specific purpose will essentially be the outcome of the decisions that are made about: contacting potential respondents (in-person, via phone, email, mail), introducing the questions (written, interviewer), and making note of responses…

I need to keep myself grounded and not get too overconfident in my writing style and previous work based on what grade I received. I have realized that I need to continue to strive for excellence instead of drafting and essay and not making edits to it that will be beneficial to my learning. I will also be able to apply the learning outcomes to my future helping me to be a more rounded person who can draft, plan, edit, analyze, incorporate evidence and portray ideas effectively to the different audiences I will…
