The main character, Marcus, struggles against a country that has become obsessed with monitoring every citizen. Doctorow’s portrayal is a great example of how surveillance can be taken too far too fast. Marcus is a computer hacker who is falsely accused of being a terrorist in a recent attack. The Department of Homeland Security puts Marcus on their watch list, and begins to monitor every aspect of his life. Doctorow’s vision of the not-so-distant future is not far off from what could be. 264 people were injured, while 3 people were killed. The suspects were seen and recorded by security cameras on the street. When the FBI took over the investigation, they released surveillance photos and videos of the two suspects, Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Two brothers who, when the footage was released, allegedly killed an MIT police officer, stole an SUV, and then engaged in a firefight with police in Watertown, Massachusetts. During the gunfight, Tamerlan Tsarnaev was shot several times, and was then run over by his brother escaping in the SUV, and was killed instantly. A few days went by and police found the other brother hiding in someones boat in their backyard. He was detained by the police shortly there after (Boston).
You may be saying to yourself, “Well, surveillance didn't stop the Boston bombers.” While this is a valid statement, it disregards the fact that the radicals who committed the crime were brought to justice. What could have happened if there were no cameras in the first place? What would the police have as a starting point? Witnesses?
