While I was enlisted in the US Navy, I was privileged to attend the Naval School of Health Sciences, and study Surgical Technology. I graduated with honors, but unfortunately, the military at the time was not paying for its Surgical Tech graduates to nationally certify. I performed all sorts of surgical cases at the major military facilities I was posted. During my eight years as a surgical tech, I had performed over ten thousand surgical cases, working hand to hand with various surgeons in the operation bed from different specialties which included: General Surgery, Colon and Rectal Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ophthalmic Surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngology, and Urology.

I was required to participate in all tasks that were within my practice and others that were beyond my specialty. My day could start as early as five in the morning. I could check in patients, Introduce myself, verify if I had right patient including verbally confirming the correct body limb that was to be surgically operated on. I guided them to the preparation room giving them a patient gown, socks, and a heated blanket to keep them warm and relaxed as I answered the concerns the patients had. I introduced intravenous injection and started running intravenous fluids for the anesthesia provider to come inject anesthesia medication in the fluids. When the patient was ready for surgery, the operating room nurse together with the anesthesia, the surgeon and I could wheel the patient to the operating room wear the required sterile gear and perform the required surgery. I was also responsible to help nurses in the recovery bay after patient’s surgery. I was a senior technician in charge of five other junior technicians who we worked as a team. I oversaw ordering of surgical supplies and surgical implants making sure we had enough supplies for future surgical cases. All the body tissues

Being a surgical technologist can be hard work; not only should a technician watch after all patients, but must keep a check on themselves. A technician needs to remain as stress free as possible, always making sure all body mechanics are in order. Forgetting to do this can lead to emotional stress, which has a negative effect on the body. A surgical technician not in full control of himself causes things to go wrong in the operating room. A technician must always be completely focused on the job.…

Once working with an LVN working a busy Medical- Surgical Unit, I normally map out the plan for the day, how I will delegate task to the LVN. The time I made a nursing error is when the LVN rushed through the IV piggybacks pulling the patients that needed to have their antibiotics at a certain time. This process is something I never do since the unit was oddly busy this particular day, I allowed the LVN to provide the antibiotics to be hung for the day. I for whatever reason did not double check the medication the LVN had provided. The LVN had given the antibiotic, that had two patients with the same last name but, different first names.…

I enjoyed reading your post and I commend you for wanting to take the necessary actions to becoming certified in medical-surgical or other specialty area once eligible. I would imagine that having a medical-surgical certification would make a nurse feel more competent in the specialty of medical-surgical nursing care. Nurses who decide to purse certification in their desired specialty area realizes the importance of continuing their nursing education, which will benefit the nurse personally, the nurses’ employer, and most important, the nurses’ patients (Boyle, Cramer, Potter, Gatua, & Stobinski, 2014). Some studies have shown that nurses who are certified in medical-surgical have an increased knowledge base and understanding of nursing measures…

You would think having a certification as a nurse’s aide by the age of sixteen and already starting on your associate’s degree would make them very proud. However, there is still more that can be done they will always say. When I first found out about nursing I had no interest. I always wanted to become the doctor and earn the “big bucks”.…

My day would begin at 8 o’clock so I had wake up at 6 o’clock and go there by bus and train which took about 45 minutes. As I know the people who work there since I moved from Russia to Germany there was a nice and familiar atmosphere around us so that I felt quite comfortable there. And even though I know most of that place I got a small introduction about that surgery as well as my jobs I would have to do during my time there. I started to follow around a doctor’s assistant who ended up being my kind of supervisor. She showed me how their computer system works and how to prepare needles, pack blood preparations, register patients and how to disinfect every single room to ensure safe care and treatment to the patients.…

Narrator: As I’m in bed sleeping, around midnight, I wake up hearing a voice, a deep, raspy voice. It takes me to the top of a mountain, where I encounter a man with a clown costume. It never said its name, but it told me that the world would end in 13 days, right at midnight. I went back home in the morning to firetrucks and ambulances surrounding my house. I see my friend, Melissa, standing beside a tree crying.…
