I volunteered at Jack Jouett Middle School for the eighth-grade AVID program. In the classes, I helped students go through the AVID tutorial process. I functioned as a guide who coached the students through a Socratic process to understand points of confusion from their core classes, and then through collaborative work to understand the steps needed to clarify their point of confusion. All students in the AVID class apply to be in the program. They must have average to high test scores with a C to B+ grade point average.…

I will be self-reflecting my physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual development using the medicine wheel as described by Mussell (2005). Mussell defines the medicine wheel as, “a symbol used to represent the dynamic system of mind, body, emotions and spirit, and the needs related to each of these aspects that must be met for the development of human potential.” (Mussell, 2005, p.115). Self-reflection of the four aspects of the medicine wheel (Mussell, 2005) will help me to gain a better self-understanding and insight.…

The main issue is being able to correctly market to the intended audience in an effective and price efficient way. Especially with there being such a strong contingency with the CareFirst grant. My goal was to make sure I fully understand the project and the aspect I needed to address in my collaterals. I did this by taking the time to research all aspects of DoctorsTelemed and the needs of my audience, and then tie the two aspects together. I didn’t start making my project in till I felt confident in my research of addressing uninsured college student’s needs in regards to health care.…

This summer I completed my field experience by shadowing a physician assistant named Adam Strantz. He works in a primary care office in Fremont, Michigan. The office, Spectrum Health Medical Group, was fairly small and included only two PAs and one physician. Before starting my shadowing, I set a few goals for myself to learn during my time there. Each and every one of my goals were met through my time there.…

During this week at my agency, I indulged in the following activities which includes; attending the team meeting, observed, sat in for intakes, med-checks as well as carried out a family therapy session. The first client scheduled for this week did not show up for session, but her mother called the agency stating that she forgot their appointment and rescheduled. On the other hand, my young client who is diagnosed with ADHD showed up for intake with her mother. Even though the agency already discussed privacy and confidentiality to the client’s mother, I re-assured her about this during the intake session. I also added that as part of confidentiality, when we come across each other at the store I will not say hi but will respond if she does; based on the knowledge gained from the my seminar class as well as ideas shared by my field liaison.…

In simulation this week, I was effective in remembering the majority of the steps for the head to toe (I always seem to forget orientation and capillary refill). I also did a good job of noticing what my peers missed during their head to toe exam.…

Vision is my inspiration. I wanted to understand how vision affects perspective and allows for every person to be unique, to mold their own personality, and to have an individual outlook on life. It is what led me to pursue optometry. The more I learned about optometry the more I came to appreciate the profession and its goal in improving patients’ vision. Now, most people take this to mean that an optometrists sole job is prescribing eyeglasses and contact lenses.…

I: During this semester, I worked with some individuals who had the disability, “cerebral palsy”. Cerebral palsy (CP) is a disorder caused by physical, social, or historical factors from the mother either prior, during, or after the individual is born. The disability causes the individual to have limited mobility on his or her left or right side of the body. Polzin, Odle, Davidson, and Longe (2007) express some important finding about cerebral palsy such as; CP is not a specific disorder but describes a broad group of neurological and physical problems… [Relating to] the cerebral cortex, a part of the brain that controls voluntary muscle movement (par. 2). For this reason the body don’t function as “normal” individuals and this demographic…
