I thoroughly enjoyed the surgery field trip, both the live knee surgery aspect of it and the Body World, as both parts allowed me to view the body through a new lens. A lot of information we’re taught in class has to do with theory using pictures straight from a coloring book, consequently meaning that we rarely ever get to see the real thing. For many of us, including me, our conception of reality regarding the body, muscles, bones, and our lifestyle in general is twisted. Going to Telus Spark helped clear up some misunderstandings, especially after being able to ask the surgeon and medical staff questions. I do regret not being able to ask questions, however I’m the type of person who takes time to process information and absorb it.…

I finally realized surgery is an art of soul and science, and not about cutting right away. It is about giving patients hope and knowing what it is best for that particular patient under that particular circumstance. For the next five years, I hope to join a surgical program at XXXX that will impart a solid foundation in the science and technical practice of medicine while establishing a personal connection with patients I see. The surgery went well it only took an hour. I woke up in the recovery room. I don't remember much but I do remember a kid was screaming. Today’s surgical dogma is tomorrow’s surgical dogsh*t, is a saying I heard throughout my residency. As many surgeries progressed from the previous standard of an open approach to laparoscopic and robotic approaches, surgeons were forced to adapt. At the beginning of the transition to laparoscopic and robotic surgery there was great resistance to change. As I neared the completion of my residency, laparoscopic procedures had become firmly rooted as a new normal and robotic surgery was right on its heels.…

I asked my mom if homeschooling was going to be an option and my doctor said that it would not be necessary and so my mother thought the same. I was not prepared to do the daily routine of…

The surgery marked the end of a very long medical journey. It all started when I went to my pediatrician at age sixteen because, unlike other girls my age, I had not experienced my first period. This reflected in the way I looked because I had not experienced the growth which inevitably comes with the change. I tried to wear shirts that would make me feel “sexy” by “hugging the curves”, but instead, these types of shirts hung pathetically because there were no curves to hug. My doctor could not give me a proper diagnosis, so I flew from doctor to doctor.…

Surgeries gone wrong can really change your perspective of life, during a routine gallbladder removal surgery that is typically forty five minutes ended up being a five hour event where I almost lost my life. In attempting to get rid of the infected organ the doctors had ripped open my liver resulting in me almost bleeding out on the operating table. When waking up I had to deal with blood transfusions, machines around my feet, ankles and wrist that were helping blood circulate my body. This event made me realize all that I have missed in life and made me want to pursue photography.…
